The Injury Bug Keeps on Biting

At first it was both starting OT Taylor Lewan and Kelvin Beachum who both was hurt in preseason and missed the first 3 regular games of the year. That was made worse when 2 of 3 games was vs the Texans who of course have JJ Watt and Jadvean Clowney who are both around 99 overall. In the place during that time was this years 3rd round pick Mario Griffin (73 ovr) who started all games at LT and RT was a mix of Carl Nicks (78 ovr) and Allan Jordan (65 ovr). It will be huge to get back your highly rated OT this week to complete your OL which was the plan all offseason.

Then against Denver in week 2 on a fumble that sorta cost the team the game also cost them the starting QB for a month. He will miss the weeks game vs the Jags then a bye week and likey miss the game vs the Colts. This loss hurts even more as Mettingburger was traded in the offseason in his place will be EJ Manuel who has a strong arm but suffers greatly in accuracy. EJ was good enough to get by last week in a win vs the Texans.

Then the passing game saw another blow right as it was getting the 2 OL back. #1 WR Kendall Wright who has lead the team in receiving yards the last 2 years will miss 2 months. The rookie DJ Robinson will have to step up and be the #1 WR and Markus Wheaton will slide over to the #2 job. Last years slot WR Justin Hunter will battle it out with the re signed Harry Douglas. Tre Mcbride is also still on the roster. This is a huge blow to the WR core as now no WR on the team is over a 80 overall rating.

Season making Win for the Titans?

The Jags took a 10 point lead late in the 2nd quarter as the Titans offense couldn't get anything going. The jags was stopping the run game and the passing game without Mariotta and Kendall Wright just couldn't get going. The titans would have to settle for a short FG with only few minutes left before half time cutting the lead to 7. That's when a sack and fumble picked up by Brian Orakpo gave the titans the ball inside the 5 yard line. Just like all of a sudden it was a tie ball game after a Jordan TD run and the Titans would be getting the ball to start the half.

The first play of the half a screen pass to the rookie WR DJ Robinson went for 38 yards and it looked like the titans would take the lead. But the drive stalled out and a vintage kick for the titans happen possible killing the camera guy. The jags would go up 13-10 with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd. Just 2 plays later EJ Manuel would try and throw deep and despite having one on one coverage the ball was under thrown and it was picked off by Demetrius McCray. Jags would go on to score highlighted by a 42 yard scramble by Blake Bortles where the defense was no where to be found. The TD was scored by Forte. After a swap of punts the Titans got the ball back with about 5 minutes left and with went to the bench to spark some life into the WR unit who had dropped several passes. EJ stepped up and converted 2 4th down plays. Jordan punched it in from a few yards out with less then 3 min to go and all 3 timeouts. So a 1st down would end for the Jags but the defense held strong forcing a punt.

The drive started at the Jax 38 with 1:45 left and 1 timeout Jags up 20-17. A couple of short passes got the ball to midfield. The rookie DJ Robinson caught a pass making it a makeable FG with about 30 seconds to go but still needing more yards. 2nd and 10 with 22 seconds left at the 26 and 1 timeout left. Backup TE Josh Hill was left open and he made a huge catch down to the 3 yard line. The titans called the last timeout with only 14 seconds left. 2 more pass plays was called but they was quickly thrown away as nobody was open and the game was sent to overtime.

After the swapping of several punts the Titans got the ball with 5 min to go in overtime backed up the own 8. Thats when maybe the play of the game was made when titans came out in one of its power sets hoping to catch the Jags by surprise and hit the rookie WR deep. But the Jags was not fooled and was in cover 2 man. Luckly the saftey was just late and it was a first down at the 38 on a 29 yard perfect pass by EJ. With Jordan getting alot of carries so far his backup Dixon came into the game and got 3 big carries pushing the ball past midfield. Now with less then 2 minutes in OT the titans had the ball at the Jax 28 facing a 3rd and 2. With a shaky FG kicker everyone assumed that the titans would keep the ball on the ground and pick up a fresh set of downs as finally the Jags defense was starting to give up some yards on the ground. As expected the titans came out in a power set with 2 TE's and the Jags loaded the box. But EJ dropped back to pass and his TE Jordan Reed was wide open for the easy catch and he walked into the endzone for the game winning TD.

Press Conference

What went into the thoughts to go with Harry Douglas and Tre Mcbride down the stretch over Wheaton and Hunter? Who starts now at WR?

We gave them both chances to make plays and they just wasn't getting it done. Harry has been in this league a long time so we was confident he could come in and make plays and he did with a huge 4th down catch. As far as who starts we aren't sure yet but we have a extra week to figure it out.

How do you think EJ has played filling in for Mariota?
Well he is 2-0 in the games he has started and anytime for a backup QB that's the only stat that matters. The main thing we told him was just to protect the football and don't make mistakes and let us win games with our defense and running game. The one interception he had today it wasn't a bad read he just under threw it and the corner make a good play. He is around 60 % and a even TD:Int ratio so that's pretty good when you factor in the losses to his OL and WR.

The running game really struggled early but it made just enough plays down the stretch to get the win. What causes the turn around?
I think the biggest thing was just we keep on running the ball and there DL got a little tired with the amount of plays we ran the 2nd half. A lot of teams will abandon the run game when its only getting 2 or 3 yards. But we felt like since we only got down by 10 we could stick with it. Jordan did eventually get to 100 yards but it took him 30 carries to get there and Dixon chipped in with 6 more carries. We do need to get Dixon some more carries though. Sometimes you get caught up during the heat of the game and you don't realize things and when it came to my attention Dixon only had a few carries. We gave him some in ovetime and he came up huge for us like he always does.

At the end of regulation after the catch by Hill when you had the ball inside the 5. A lot of fans was booing bc the EJ threw the ball away instead of giving a WR a chance to make a play. Also why kick it when you had time to throw 1 more quick pass like a fade?
That was a wild ending and when the timeout was called after the catch I told EJ if he isn't open wide away throw it into the stands. We prob did have time to call one more play but I just didn't want to take the risk of a sack or a turnover on a forced pass. We had played better as the game went on and I was confident if we got to OT we still had a chance to win. Beccause there passing game was really struggling and they even went to there backup QB.

What went into the thought process to throw it instead of run in on the play that went down as the game winner?
The are a very smart and well coached team and I knew they would expect us to try to run it if we came out in a power set. It was only 3rd and 2 I believe at the time so even if its incomplete pass we still could have gone for it on 4th. We called a high % pass to the TE and luckily for us they had sold out to stop the run and Reed was fast enough to score.

Despite Holes and Injuries Titans offense is clicking

The last few years the offense has been one of the lowest scoring in the NFL. Season 3 got off the a bad start with a lot of injuries to key starters for multiple weeks like QB Marcus Mariota, OT Taylor Lewan, OT Kelvin Beachum and WR Kendall Wright.

Both of the fill in OT's and EJ Manuel while not putting up flashy stats played good enough to help the titans to a 5-1 start. The biggest injury of the bunch is to #1 WR Kendall Wright and is still out for about another month. When asked about the game owner Brandon Georgiafan said "we have struggled replacing him and that's forced us to play less 3 WR sets. We have played multiple people at the #2 WR spot and so far nobody has stepped up and took the job". Marcus Wheaton lead the team with 4 catches last game so maybe that's a sign that he will take the job from Justin Hunter and Harry Douglas. One person at WR who has stepped up is rookie 2nd round WR DJ Robison who leads the team in catches, yards and TD with more then double the amout of yards as anyone else on the team.

The offense this year is currently 4th in the NFL in points with 27.6 a game, 1st in rushing with 176.2 a game, 11th in total yards at 327.6 a game, 28th in passing yards with 151.4. There is no secret who the MVP is on this team and that's HB Darrell Jordan who has 659 rushing yards, 9 TD and 5.9 per carry. His backup Kareem Dixon auctally got more carries the Jordan did last week and he currently has 299 yards, 3 TD and 5.6 per carry.

The biggest reason for the improved play this year might be protecting the ball more and throwing less interceptions. When asked why the turn around the owner had this to say "so we have done a better job of protecting the ball then we did last year. We are also seeing a lot of 8 sometimes even 9 man boxes to stop the run game. When that happens that's when our WR have to take advantage of the 1-1 matchups".

We aren't sure how long the improved offense will last and odds are its gonna have some games where it struggles to put up points when the run game gets stopped. But its obvious the team is heading in the right direction.

2018 FA Recap

Overall Thoughts
When you read over the list you will quickly see what the strategy was for the titans this year. They are known to be one of the most physical teams in all of the NFL. So they went after a lot of speed guys to help round out the roster. You will also notice not a lot of high overall ratings and big names. So with pretty much all of the starting lineup set the GM went with players to fill rolls to add depth at every position. Also they didn't want to overspend for anyone and will have plenty of cap space going forward.

Darrin Waller - 71 overall

This is the guy that the twitter world is buzzing over after spending the last few years on the Lions bench. He is a height-weight-speed monster for a TE at 6'6 and 240 pounds with 90 speed, 90 acceleration, 84 agility and 87 jumping. He has major work to do in area's like blocking and route running. His catching at 77 could also be improved on but he does have some skills with over 80 in catch and traffic and special catch.

Dan Kilgore - 80 overall
Carl Nicks retired so a versatile backup center/guard was needed to fill his spot and this 30 year old is a perfect fit for that role. He has 90 run blocking and 89 strength at this stage of his career he will not improve much. But if one of the interior guys gets hurt he should be able to fit right in with the run first strength of the titans

Zach Fulton - 78 overall
Here is a guy we was surprised no other user teams had a bid on for since he is only 26 years old. He is a good all round lineman with mid 80's for both run blocking, pass blocking and strength. It will be tough for him to see the field with the starting unit all back and Kilgore likely getting the call ahead of him. But the main thing this does is set your OL regular season roster and allow you not to focus on that come draft time.

Cordarrelle Patterson - 77 overall
He is a former 1st round draft bust but at ony 27 still has a chance to be a role player due to one thing and that is speed. He also adds some some size to this unit at 6'2 220 pounds while he will never be a all around WR he has some interesting traits to work with 90 speed, 97 agility, 90 acceleration, 95 elusiveness, 92 spin move, 93 jumping, 96 ball carry vision, 97 juke move, and 94 kick return. The bad news his catching skills are just awful and at this stage it will be hard for him to improve on those. He will likely be used as a special teams guy and on plays like streaks and screens.

WR Cassidy Reeves - 57 overall
He does have 81 catch but after that the wheels quickly fall off on his receiving skills as the others are beyond terrible. But at 5'8 173 pounds he was signed to see if he can make a impact on special teams. He has 95 speed, 95 acceleration, 91 kick return but suffers from agility being only a 86. His spot on the final roster is far from a lock with the late signing of Patterson .

WR Paul Richardson - 74 overall
If we said a WR was a FA that last year had 60 catches for 1,004 yards and 10 TD while being only 26 years old. That player also had the following ratings 94 speed, 92 acceleration, 88 agility, 88 catch, 84 route running, 90 jumping and 82 catch in traffic. You would prob assume we are talking about a elite FA with lots of offers. Instead we are talking about no name Paul Richardson who is somehow only a 74 overall. We have no clue how the WR group will shakeout but its going to be very fun to watch and write about.

DE Kyle Van Noy - 80 overall
The former high 2nd round pick is currently 27 years old and with 1 point improvement in his block shedding his overall went up 2 points. He is a bit undersized at 6'3 252, but with good speed and 82 tackle and 84 power moves he will be just fine as a backup DE.

DE/OLB Marcus Tull - 68 overall
At 6'3 260 pounds he could play either DE or LB and his overall will not change much. He has some interesting tools to work with like mid 80's in all 3 speeds, power moves and hit power. With his 35 awareness we aren't sure if he even knows what side of the ball to line up on. One of the reasons we think he could make the move to DE is we don't think the awareness will bother him as much as it would at LB. His 64 block shedding also needs major work. But if the 35 awareness was double his overall would easily be in the 80's. He will have to fight to make the roster

DT Bill Winn - 75 overall
He is veteran 29 year big guy at 6'4 old 300 pounds who is solid across the board. He will likely play a handful of snaps a game with the 2nd unit unless a rookie is drafted.

DT Terrence Cody - 71 overall
Everyone knows Mt. Cody is a 34 nose so it may have raised some eyebrows when he was signed by the 43 titans. He is currently 6'4 349 pounds and might be slowest guy in the NFL with 45 speed. But he has 2 key traits that will make him a good at stopping the run and that's 97 strength and 90 block shedding. He will be used in goaline sets and in obvious run downs.

OLB Marquis Flowers - 78 overall
This is another player I was shocked to get without any other bids and to be able to wrap him up early. He is still just 26 and has the size also at 6'3 250. He is a speedy cover 2 LB with 88 speed, 85 agility, 89 acceleration, 81 pursuit. His overall is brought down by his 59 awareness and 65 play recognition also his tackling is only 77. Another thing he brings to the table is a 77 zone coverage rating.

MLB Javonte France - 62 overall
Another low risk signing was France who currently is the #2 MLB but some shuffling will happen even if a MLB isn't drafted. He has a few key traits we liked like 83 speed, 90 acceleration, 81 tackle and 81 pursuit. We know his overall will likely go up if he is moved to OLB but right now we need him more at MLB.

CB Pierre Desir - 74 overall
The titans was hoping to land it big in the CB market but the price tag for the elite guys was just to high. Instead another cap friendly deal was brought in for a guy that we feel can start at nickel despite his low overall rating. He has amazing size at 6'2 206 pounds makes him able to cover all the bigger WR's. He also has some very nice traits with 88 speed, 90 agility, 92 acceleration, 86 press, 82 mcv and 86 zcv.

FS Marqueston Huff - 83 overall
He has spent the last 4 years as a backup safety and he thought he would test FA and be able to land a starting job. We also thought that since he has 89 speed, 85 agility, 91 acceleration and 86 zone coverage all while only be 26. But when no other teams was interested he came back home to the titans

SS/FS Chris Cook - 83 ovr
When it looked like Huff was leaving a backup FS needed to be had so Cook was the target as both starting spots are still locked down. He still has solid speed despite being 31 years old and his 88 zone coverage was a key reason he was signed. When Huff was unexpectly brought back he was told he would likely shift over to SS battling with 25 year old Layne Sam (71 ovr) for the backup job.

K Jordan Gay - 69 overall
With his 95 kick power he has one of the stronger legs in the NFL so all of his xp will go to improve on his 84 accuracy. He is also only 28 years old

P Jordan Berry - 70 overall
His awareness makes his overall low but he has 90 power and 95 accuracy and is only 27 years old

Offseason Preview

Overview
With over 55 million in cap space plus 10 total draft picks there is a chance the roster will look different next year. The extra draft picks come in rounds 2,3, and 4.

QB

Mariota once again didn't live up to expectations from the stat side throwing to many interceptions and a rating of 74.3. He even lost his job for 2 games. But he was signed to a new deal fairly cheap for the position. While he may not have good stats he lead the team to the playoffs for the 3rd time in his 4 years. EJ Manuel is a UFA and the team has had brief talks with him but a new deal has yet to be reached. EJ went 15 for 17 on the year with a QB rating of 147 in his brief playing time. Last years 5th round pick Michael Griffin has amazing arm strength with 98 but his accuracy means he will have to fight for a spot on the roster.

The last few QB draft classes has been very good so that's left not many needs at the position with other teams. We know some competition will be brought in at some point even if its just as a backup.
Need = High

HB
Darrell Jordan and Kadeem Dixon once again proved to be one of if not the best duo's in the NFL and both will be back next year. Much has been made over the decision to pass on a QB in the 4th round for a 3rd HB. While that still looks like a major mistake Aerion Gray did look very impressive and finished with over 200 yards and over 6 yards per carry on the year. The 4th HB David Cobb isn't expected to be brought back and a 4th HB likely will not be added to the team unless its a cheap vet or a late round pick. But with the
titans owner you can never count out bringing in a HB.
Need = None

TE
Rookie Justin Austin is a star in the making after being drafted in the 2nd round. A deal was finally reached with Josh Hill late in the process and he will battle the physical freak TE Darren Waller for the backup job next year. So this position is set and no need to draft or bring another person in.
Need = None

OL
Once again all 5 starting OL will be back so this is another position where there isn't a need. The trade of the young OT to the jets did open up a hole at backup OT. There is depth with the 2nd unit with C Kilgore (81 ovr) OG Fulton (76 ovr) and this years 6th round rookie OG Crosby who has 86 run blocking. A young tackle is needed unless some position changes happen.
Need = Low

WR
Stop me if you have heard this before the titans have a major need at WR. Paul Richardson lead the way in TD and stats after being a very under the rador FA pickup. He is a better fit at the slot then the outside though. Kendall Wright once again missed 2 months of the year and can no longer be counted on. Cordedalle Patterson is still blazing fast but pretty much just a special teams guy. Last year 6'4 3rd round rookie showed flashes but had less then 150 yards on the year. DJ Robinson hasn't took his game to the next level yet.

The twitter world is buzzing over the 2 names rumored to be coming to the titans and that's Calvin Johnson and Kennan Allen. Calvins name on the trade block may seem like a shock but the team is in major cap trouble. He will soon be 33 and losing a step but he still has the jump ball game to take advantage of man coverage. Kennan Allen would be the true #1 WR and the team has the assets to pull over a trade for him. First of course they will see who all hits FA which could include big names like AJ Green, Kelvin Benjamin, and Perryman.
Need = Very High

-----------------------------------------------------

DE
Both starting DE's from this year team with around a 95 overall rating had deals up but only one of those was brought back and that's Derrick Morgan. Orakpo at 33 just wanted way to much $ and he only had 4 sacks this year. So its obvious he is on the downside of his career.

There is depth at the position and both backups Kyle Van Noy and Chris Mccain will be back next year. The one wildcard is Traivon Holliday who is 24 years old and a base rating of 76. He was the 1st pick in the 4th round but was cut in preseason so the titans haven't had the chance to reach a new deal with him yet.

As you can see even with Orakpo gone there is bodies at the position but also a chance for a new starter if the right guy is in FA or the draft.
Need = Mild

DT
A new mega deal was also reached with Casey who is one of the best players in all of the NFL. His running mate Daryll Crawford who exploaded in the playoffs and last years 1st round pick Victor Woods also are back. Two guys who will be fighting for roster spots are Mount Cody and Billy Wynn. The wildcard at this position is Devonne Riley. He was just a rookie this year but was a surprise cut after being the 7th pick in the 2nd round. The main reason he was cut was because his slow development. The team hopes to reach a 1 or 2 year deal with him before FA hits.
Need = Low

LB
Another deep positon on the team is OLB so much so that a starter could be traded if need be for a WR. You do need a backup MLB but that will likely be filled by a cheap vet in FA. Zavier Gooden is currently 29 but they are 2 backups on the team that we are ok starting if he was to get hurt or get slower.
Need = Low

CB
The biggest area of need on the defense in CB where a deal has yet to be reached with the 2 starters who are both over 30 Sam Shields and Jason Mccourtey. They players have yet to lose a step but that's to be expected so it has the front office worried. A move to safety also doesn't make sense as we don't have a need at that position.

The 2 known players at that position are Alfonzo Dennard and Pierre Desir but nether is a #1 CB . If one of them can be brought back for a 1 year deal around 4-5 million that will likely happen. If not the team could just choose to reload at that position.
Need = High

S
A new deal was reached with SS Searcy so both starters and the #1 backup at both spots will be back next year. Chris Cook is the other safety on the roster that we hope doesn't retire.
Need = Low

Overall Offense Thoughts
In the past 3 QB's have been took but with the top 2 being so strong and with depth at WR and DL I think it will just be 2 that make it. I would expect Matt Jones to make it as in the past titans have always had 4 guys and Matt at 231 pounds and 90 trucking he can be a short yard back when Jordan needs a break. Some major decisions will have to be made at WR with 8 on the team now. 7 can make the final roster but the titans don't run many 4 WR sets. But in the end i think the WR will just be to good to cut. Last year 9 OL made the team but could just be 8 this year. The team is high on the vet Loadholt at OG even though he is listed at OT bc his run blocking.

Overall Offense Thoughts

They are a ton of bodies at DE and DT so that's where the quality people are gonna have to be cut or traded. If there is a weakness its at backup MLB where Borrow is just a warm body. The team knew there was not space for 10 rookies on the roster so that's why the trade was made to get Kennan Allen. So most of your late rounds picks will not make the team. That's why you saw lots of DE's being drafted bc that's where they was a hole at for a backup to make the team. The other positions like WR, HB, TE, DL, OL, DB after round 3 they just wasn't room on the roster for anyone else. The DB group is pretty much set with the 5 CB's and 4 S's.

Everyone knows by now the reason for the titans offense success is the OL and for the 3rd straight year all 5 guys will be back. We might be biased but we still think its the best OL in the NFL. This will be the 4th year both guards and tackles have been together. The team continues to work on its run blocking (spending xp) and feel like its just a game or two away from improving close to everyone. There is quality depth at all 3 spots including a rookie that was drafted in the 4th round this year

Jordan Reed was traded for a 3rd round pick last year early in the season and the TE group didn't miss a beat. The 2nd year superstar development 6'6 Justin Austin had a good rookie year with 40 catches for 619 yards and 1 TD. His catch and catch in traffic are both over 90 now and his route running is respectable and keeps on improving. Once again a battle will happen for the #2 TE spot between the all around vet Josh Hill and the freaky athletic Darren Waller. We expected bigger things from Waller last year as he only had 6 catches. At 6'6 240 with 90 speed and acceleration we think this could be the year he finally puts it together.

It will be business as usual in the backfield with Jordan back to carry the load and Dixon giving him a rest. We hear Jordan is pissed off he didn't win the rushing title last year and is super motivated. Last years 4th round pick Gray continues to improve and will get a few carries a game. Also 230 lb Matt Jones was brought in as a cheap FA and could see some short yardage carries as well.

For years and years the problem with the titans has been the WR position and unless you have been living under a rock you should know by now this should finally be the year that problem is fixed. The titans currently have 8 WR's on the roster after signing 4 in FA and making a trade for one more. They are rumors going around that will be down to 7 if Kendall Wright gets traded for a 2nd round pick.

Cavin Johnson was signed to a 1 year 13.52 million $ deal and while his speed is dropping he still is near 99 in jumping, awareness, stamina, catch, spec catch and relase and not to far behind is route running and catch in traffic. Kennan Allen was brought over from the chargers in a deal that included 2 high draft pick and last years leading WR Paul Richardson. Allen is the true #1 WR we have been looking at for a long time and is elite in route running, catch in traffic and catching.

Its anyone's guess on who the slot WR will be with DJ Robinson, Chris Conly, Phillip Dorsett, Sammy Coates and Tevin Goode all battling it out. There is way to much to say about these 5 guys as they all have special traits but we expect DJ Robinson to get the first crack the slot job since he is 23 and is the best route runner and has 97 accel to go along with it. Conley is a interesting guy at 6'3 with 94 speed and 97 jumping but doesn't run good routes. Another person of note is Phillip Dorsett who we was stunned got no other offers in Free Agent as he is one of the fastest players in the NFL with 96 speed and 96 agility.

Marcus got a new deal last year despite his average stats so it came as a bit of a surprise when the 1st round pick was QB Garret Griffin. Words cant express how excited the front office is to have him. Many sleepless nights in Nashville was spent on this projected 4th round draft pick and turns out he was a top 10 true talent with superstar development that was picked at 22. He has barley seen the field in preseason and his overall is already up 2 points.

He has everything you look for in a QB 6'2 221 with a eye popping 91 speed, 90 agility, 88 acceleration, 92 ball carry vision and 92 juke move. He isn't just a runner has he has the arm to make all the throws with a 90 rating. He has been working on his short accuracy in practice and that's already up to a 88 and not far behind that is his mid accuracy.

Season 5 Defense Preview

The titans had one of the best defense in the NFL last year but it was starting to age so you will see 4 new starters this year.

Gone are the top 2 CB's from last year Sam Shields and Jason Mccourty as well as Piere Diesr who started a few games at nickel. Loading up on the FA market 4 CB's was brought in. Jimmy Smith is 31 and is still one of the best in the NFL. Kyle Fuller will get the first crack at other starter due to his playmaking skills. The nickel job will be a battle between Alex Carter and Kevin Johnson. They have similar speed and acceleration but Kevin has the 7 point advantage in agility. Another huge advantage kevin has is 21 points higher in catching and 3 points in zone coverage. So Kevin will start out as the nickel CB and Alfonzo Dennard is still around as the #5 CB.

Jurrell Casey and Darryl Crawford are back to hold down one of the best DT groups in the NFL and Darryl is coming off a playoff game where he almost single handily won it for the titans with 11 tackles and 4 TFL. Derrick Morgan was the one who got a new deal ahead of Brian Orkapo who was not brought back. As you read in our previous thread about our RE job we have a lot of options. It looks like it will be with platoon with Hunter (speed guy) playing in the Nickel on passing downs. While Holliday plays in 4-3 and on running downs. There is just crazy depth on the titans DL with last years 1st round pick 300 pound Victor Woods with 92 acceleration unable to get a starting job yet.

All 3 starting LB's and both Safteys are back. This will be the contract years for 2 of the orginial draft pieces who was brought in with LB Mike Lindsay and S Jamal Boone. Both of whom have a rating close to 90 with scheme bonus kicked in. A name to keep a eye on is 3rd round Saftey BJ Mason. He could be subbed in on passing downs as he is a ball hawk.

Titans run game dominates in week 1

A lot was made about the passing game and the moves that was made to improve it this offseason. But the passing game would not be needed in this game as the titans ran all over the raiders with 242 rushing yards.

When asked the Owner had this to say "they didn't respect our running game and played 2 high safety's about all game and didn't blitz much". So with star LB Khali Mack out for the game the titans OL just man handled the raiders front 7. Darrell Jordan had 22 carries for 128 yards and 1 TD while Kadeem Dixon had 9 carries for 79 yards. He broke a 41 yard run up the middle on the opening drive for a TD. Also QB Garet Gilbert had 35 yards on 2 carries.

3 holding calls on separate drives was a killer by the OL in the first half and that forced the young QB to play behind the sticks. "We wanted to protect him in his first start and not ask him to do a lot. But the holding calls in the first half took us out of our game plan. A lot of excitement is going around with our new WR's and we know that but they just never took away our inside run game. We was lucky enough for him not to force any passes and he had 0 interceptions for us which is the only stat that matters for a QB. On his 7 completions he completed them to 6 different people"

It will be interesting to see how teams play the titans this year but the raiders choose to take away the pass game drop back into zone. That's something that was never seen last year. "We are very confident in our OL and we fell like we can run the ball on anyone. If we are able to play our style of football we are tough to beat. We just gotta start making the plays in the passing game to keep the defense honest"

Despite bad play calling Rookie QB Shines

Anytime you can win a division game on the road you take it no matter what and that was the case this week. It looked like it was going to be a easy win with a 14-0 lead after titans forced a punt with around 45 seconds in the half and getting the ball in the 3rd. The Texans got a safety on a handoff and then hit a pass play to cut the lead 14-5. It was the kind of game where all of a sudden you look up and you need your defense to make a stop or you lose. The Texans rushed had time for 1 more play and it was stopped short and time would wind down. A tough and ugly 21-15 win for the titans

The owner had this to say "we don't like to play the Texans as they have a very limited playbook of Lynchs 14 runs every single one of them was inside zone and I think all of those out of shotgun. The TE lead the with 6 catches for 83 yards and then next up was the HB Lynch with 5 for 59."

It was a controversial move when 2 key draft picks plus a productive WR in Paul Richardson was traded for the Kennan Allen the day of the NFL draft. "We brought him here to beat man coverage specifically in the red zone and that's what he did on the slant pattern. Last year I don't know if we make that play call or if our WR's score that TD as it was 3rd down. If we settle for a FG there then turns our we would have lost the game." Allen wasn't done though and he only had 2 catches on the day but both of them went for TD's. "We called a play action rollout and they happened to be in cover 4. Gilbert made sorta a risky pass and threw it pretty quickly. He was able to find the space in between the holes of the cover 4 and made a perfect pass on a out pattern". He would go on to add a rushing TD on a scramble off a play action.

Gilbert would finish 8 for 10 with 113 passing yards, 3 TD's (1 rush) and 1 interception. On the interception he spotted that they was stacking the box so he called a quick pass and made a bad pass that cost us 3 points." We have got to throw the ball more when they are stacking the box like that and playing man defense. I know its scary bc they have Watt and Clowney. We will work this week in practice on getting the ball down field more. Not only do we have elite WR's now we also have 2nd year TE Austin who is a matchup nightmare.

TE Waller Finally Makes a Play

When Darren Waller was signed as a cheap under the radar FA last year he was expected to make a big impact right away. But then Justin Austin was drafted in the 2nd round and he was just to good to get off the field with superstar development . Jordan Reed who had been the starter was then traded to the Redskins mid year opening up the #2 spot for Waller. His season would end short with a injury and he finished with just 6 catches on the year.

The reason he was expected to make a big impact despite his awful route running was at 6'6 240 pounds he is the fastest TE in the NFL with 90 speed. He also has 90 acceleration to go along with it. The titans would go on to blow out the saints this week 42-3 and it all got started by Waller who finally made a big play that the fans have been wanting on. "We initially had a run play call but when we saw the man coverage and 8 in the box. The rookie QB changed the play to a pass. They got some pass rush but Gilbert was able to bide time and find Waller and he took it to the house for 65 yards." With the game out of hand he was bumped up #1 job in the 2nd half and would then add a 2nd catch.

We don't really know what to expect from Waller but this confirms he as won the #2 job over Josh Hill. Hopefully he will be another reason to make teams think twice about playing so much man/cover 1 vs him espically if you have slow LB's.

After scoring a TD on the opening drive this was the first possession by saints offense

Rookie QB Gilbert throws 4 TD's in huge division win

Last weeks loss the rookie QB played solid football until the 4th quarter when he threw 2 interceptions in the rain. The Jags and titans know each other very well and typically the Jags win because they win the turnover battle. Last year they won all 3 matchup including a 3 point win in the playoffs where titans lost the turnover battle by 3. So all week the coaches preached if your #1 and #2 read aren't wide open don't take any chances either take the sack, throw it away or check it down.

The titans came out on firing running the ball every play but one and that was a 22 yard screen pass caught by Jordan. He would go on to score on a short TD run. Titans would end up leading 21-13 at half and the Jags would get the ball to start out the 3rd. Just one minute into the half Rogers would force a pass and FA signing Jimmy Smith would intercept it and start at the 44 yard line. But a key sack for the Jags would force a punt and shockingly the titans would finally pin someone back to the 5 yard line. This lead to some boo from titans fans as the team was moving the ball on the ground and in FG range before the sack. With 20 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter Jags would score on a curl pattern but miss the 2 point conversation and Titans was up 21-19.

This is when the game would change after another Junior Gallete sack it was 3rd and 19 with 8:42 seconds at the Jax 28 yard line line. The QB had this to say "We caught them in cover 2 man and we had a play called where the 2 WR's go deep and then both TE's cross. Waller is a TE with 4.4 (90 speed) so he is close to impossible to guard on deep routes in man. The OL blocked well and I was able catch him across the middle and he split the safteys and ran by everyone"

With 5 minutes to Julius Thomas would score to cut the lead to 2 points. If there is anything the titans are good at it's running a 4 minute offense to end the game.

It was now 4th and inched at the Jax 35 with 1:44 to go and 0 timeouts for the Jags. The owner had this to say " This was a real tough spot because even though they was out of timeouts you didn't want to punt them the ball back because all they needed was a FG to win. Plus you run the risk of getting a touchback and only gaining 15 yards. We would have liked to hit a FG that way it forces them to score a TD with 0 timeouts to go. Then when you factor in the wind, 52 yard FG and our history of kicks that was to risky also. So we decided to go for it and we came out a iformation power set." That's when the risky play call was made to pass the ball instead of trusting the NFL's best OL "They sold out to stop the run and then that left our #2 TE Waller wide open for a easy 1st down. Waller would go on to score on the play but looking back on it he should have gave himself up and not scored the TD. The Jags would add a FG, but Calvin recovered the onside kick and titans win 35-29.

Rookie QB Garret Gilbert was huge in this game going 8 for 10 with 233 passing yards, 4 TD and 0 interceptions. On one of the plays you will see below he dumped it off to Jordan and he just runs over the DB and scores a 40 yard TD. He would also add 99 yards on 19 carries.

Who is left to be signed this year?

Cap Space 17.4 Million
Cap Room 64.7 Million

Age 29 David Decastro
He is looking for a big deal 6 year 56 million which is a lot of $ for a OG even if he is a good as Decastro. His franchise tag salary is 8.88 million so that could be the smarter option. I don't see anyway the teams lets a OG with 94 strength and 95 run blocking walk for nothing

Age 30 Kelvin Beachum
Its only a matter of time before a deal gets done because Beachums 99 pass blocking and 96 run blocking is elite. He is only looking for a 3 year 20.9 million $ deal. We think he is one of the most under rated OT in the NFL.

Age 24 Kadeem Dixon

The other HB for the titans is in the middle of another great year as the #2 HB and rumors say he may go back to returning kicks also. He is averaging a career best 5.5 a carry and already has 4 TD's. The superstar development HB is looking for a 5 year 13.8 million

Others
K Jordan Gay

He will resign soon only wants 810K

CB Alfonzo Dennard
He only wants 1 year 3.57 million but at this time titans are not intrested in bringing him back

C Dan Kilgore
For a backup OL at the age of 31 he wants 3 year and 8.74 million so not sure if the titans will want to pay that

OG Zach Fulton
Instead of Kilgore the team will likely resign Fulton who is the cheaper option and only wants 3 year 2.67 million. He is also younger at 27

OLB Marquis Flowers
He is a very quality backup and special teams guy and we think can start if he had to. The team wants to resign him and is asking for less then 1 million per year.

DE Chris Mccain

The team isnt interested in bringing him back due to depth at DE and him wanting over 2 million per year. He has the odd man out in the DE race so far this year.

WR Calvin Johnson
He is off to a bit of a slow stat but he has helped keep the defense honest and helped open up chances for other players to catch TD's. We don't know how much $ he will want yet as he doesn't know if he will retire. If he does decide to play him coming back could hinge on his speed.

OT /OG King Dunlap
He was just signed yesterday after being cut by the Bills and with his size and 97 run blocking he is the perfect fit for this offense. If he doesn't retire he will be brought back ahead of Kilgore and Fulton

CB Jimmy Smith
He is 31 years old and still one of the best CB's in the NFL. He is currently making about 9 million on a 1 year deal. With depth at CB the team will not want to pay him that much $ so he is likely gone. He isn't interested in talking about a new deal yet

Already Signed
OLB Mike Lindsay
One of the heart and souls of the titans draft class at 24 years old the former 3rd round pick signed a 6 year 28.4 million deal.

HB Darrell Jordan
The NFL best HB signed a team friendly deal 6 years for 20.5 million

TE Waller
The speedy TE is enjoying a breakout year with 4 TD's so far and he signed a new 2 year deal before the regular season

FS Jamal Boone
The former 3rd round picked signed another team friendly deal 5 year 9.58 million. He has started since his 2nd year in the NFL.

The secret weapon on the titans offense

img_3930-png.1884

When you start talking about the reason for the success for the NFL's best rushing attack the first person whose name comes up is Darrell Jordan for obvious reasons. Then next up they will mention the OL as whole which has has the same 5 starters for 4 years now. After that if you get to a 3rd reason it will be the depth at HB most notable Kadeem Dixon.

But the one name who never comes up when it should is FB Ryan Hewitt. He is now 28 years old and has great size at 6'4 and 254 pounds and is arguable the best blocking FB in the NFL. The titans run a offense where FB in the game more then any team in the NFL

In a league where its become vogue to give your FB 1 carry a game Ryan never touches the ball. In the last 25 games Ryan has 1 carry. He will occasionally catch the ball out of the backfield but even that he has yet to do this year. The owner had this to say "The FB has one job and one job only in our offense system and that is to run block. We don't' care how big you are. We don't care how fast you are. We don't care how good your hands are. The only think we look for in a FB is run blocking." This past year Pro Football Focus rated Ryan has the 3rd best blocking FB in the NFL behind Dallas's Henry Hynoski and Kansas City's Anthony Sherman.

This will be the 3rd year Ryan has been on the titans and the previous 2 the titans lead the NFL in rushing and so far that's the case again this year. We don't think that is just a coincidence ? So the next time your watching a titans game sneak a peak over to the FB and you will see the secret weapon of the NFL's best rushing attack.

Strength vs Strength

I didn't know what to expect from the Dolphins as we had never played before. They had a bad record, but now they was back to full strength in the front office. They also have the best pair of DT's in the NFL with Suh and Gerald McCoy. So it was going to be strength vs strength as the the Titans interior OL went up against the Dolphins DT's.

The titans offense struggled a but out of the gates and was up 3-0 and was driving right before half time. With time running down they was time for one more play and TE Justin Austin would score on a slant pattern to go up 10-0. Darrell Jordan would add two 2nd half TD's to put the Titans up 17 points. A missed tackle by a backup safety would lead to a long Dolphins TD as Titans held on to a 24-14 lead.

Darrell Jordan and the Titans OL would win the battle up front. As a team they rushed for 167 yards with 124 of those coming from Jordan. Garret Gilbert did his job going 11 of 15 with 0 interceptions with 6 guys catching passes.

Is Austin the best young TE in the NFL?

img_4007-png.1938

Going into the 2018 NFL draft one of the strongest positions on the team was TE. Jordan Reed still had a few years left in his prime and was playing at a pro bowl level. Josh Hill was proven as a solid #2 TE and Darren Waller was just signed as a niche role player. The team was really high on Waller who is the fastest TE in the NFL.

When the 2nd round hit the titans decided to stick to the best player available philosophy and picked a TE. That player was Justin Austin from Western Kentucky. It was a weak class for TE's and Austin was clearly the top ranked TE on the titans board despite others going ahead of him. He was still on the board with the 28th pick in the 2nd round. He had the size, speed and ball skills that every team looks for when finding a modern TE.

He played so well that Jordan Reed was quickly traded for a 3rd round pick to the redskins. He isn't the blocker that the team would prefer and that's something the team will improve starting next year. He is arguable the best receiving TE in the NFL. A ton of practice time was spent on him and it has paid off. He has 93 catching, 94 catch in traffic and 85 route running. The goal was to get his route running up to 90 by seasons end. While it looks like he will fall just short of that no doubt that has improved this year. Since he is so athletic it allows him to line up at WR in a lot of shotgun formations.

It looks like he will put up similar receiving numbers this year as he did his rookie year. The one area where he has really improved this year is catching TD's. Last year he had 1 and this year he already has 6. Having Kennan Allen to help take the pressure off him this year has been huge. If your wondering that 3rd round pick was part of the trade that Allen was brought over in.

The NFL has a lot of really young TE's so if he is really the best is a conversation best saved for a rainy. There is no doubt that he should be in the conversation.
