The Tigers have top prospects blocked by Curtis + Gomez and would like to avoid paying the two in the future. Ortiz represents the biggest acquisition of their rebuild, giving the team a stud prospect to build their future contender out of.

Seattle remains at the top of their division despite losing Ken Griffey Jr, the league's WAR leader. With little to replace the hole in the outfield, Chad Curtis can come in and immediately boost their production in order to keep them in the race against the powerful Angels. His leadership skills will also help keep the clubhouse going when things get tough at the end of the season. Doherty shores up an already impressive bullpen and takes over spot start duty. The young Chris Gomez is a controllable piece that can platoon against lefties during the playoff stretch.

Overall, the Tigers get the top prospect they have been hoping to get while the Mariners grab three controllable pieces in/entering their prime that can help push for the playoffs this year and in the near future.

Seattle does have current unrest in the clubhouse also, says we need clubhouse leaders in meet the team tab. The fact Curtis is a + leader was a factor.
