The San Francisco 49ers were found to illegally obtain FS Jason McCourty in free agency. Per McCourty's tier, he was slotted a max contract of $9M per year. The 49ers signed him at $10m per. Both the Eagles and Bears had offered McCourty the max deal allowed under the rules.
After talking to all parties involved, the 49ers agreed to trade their 4th round pick to the Bears for Chicago's 7th round pick in tonight's draft. This gives the Bears something as they feel they had a legitimate shot at signing McCourty while not making the 49ers give up a player they may have signed anyway. The Eagles removed themselves from the compensation discussion.
The league feels this was an honest mistake as they thought all DBs fit in the CB maximum tier and feels this is a reasonable sanction for a 1st time offense. We appreciate Burns and Paytonno1son helping georgiafan and myself work out an agreement. This trade should be processed in game at some point later today.
