San Diego Chargers
2016 Season Preview
QB
Aerion Hunter
Phillip Rivers
Going into the pre-season this battle looked to be all Rivers, but with his arm strength dwindling and Hunters running ability showing to be useful (89 spd), Hunter came out the victor. It will be interesting how Hunter plays with pass rushing defenses like Oakland and KC on the schedule.
HB
Melvin Gordon
Aundre Frazier
LeGarrette Blount
Gordon is coming off a fantastic year as he led all RBs in Touchdowns and was 2nd in yards to only Todd Gurley. With the addition of Frazier look for Gordon's numbers to drop slightly but there's a possibility of two 1000 yard backs in San Diego this year.
WR
Keenan Allen
Marvin Jones
Ben Hall
Stevie Johnson
Ben Hall breaks the mold of the typical WR in San Diego, Hall is the only WR under 6'2" but he makes up for it in athleticism. Allen will be the leader of the group and with Antonio Gates now retired look for him to pick up the slack. Owner/GM Glen Cieske has made it clear he wants to see Allen moved around from the edge to the slot more often.
TE
Jermaine Gresham
John Phillips
Greshman isn't Gates, we are all aware of that but Gresham brings something to the table in his blocking ability. Phillips was Aerion Hunters favorite target in the pre-season after Stevie Johnson.
OL
LT - King Dunlap
LG - Orlando Franklin
C - Chris Watt
RG - Kevin Zeitler
RT - DJ Fluker
With an average Run Blocking ability of 91 the Chargers will look to keep the ball on the ground this year.
DE
Melvin Ingram
Jeremiah Attaochu
Much has been said about the pass rushing ends in Oakland, but these two are not far behind. Both are an overall of 91 and will look to get after QBs all season long.
DT
Corey Liuget
Kendall Reyes
Both of these guy are 26 years of age. While Liuget is the stud Reyes is starting to come into his own. Reyes is the pass rusher with 76 speed and Luiget is the do-it-all guy.
LB
OLB - Denzel Perryman
MLB - Manti Te'o
OLB - Donald Butler
While not the greatest core in the league these 3 are very servicable and play well together. Teo led the group with 102 tackles 19 TFLs 3 sacks and 3 INTs.
CB
Brandon Flowers
Jimmy Hendrix
Chris Cook
Pat Robinson
Hendrix is moving into the starting spot opposite of Flowers to attempt to help improve a secondary that created a lot of turnovers last season but still gave up a lot of yards.
S
Eric Weddle
Cooper Taylor
Gerod Holliman
Jahleel Addae
Eric Weddle is going to get the nod at Strong Safety to start the year in San Diego, his lack of speed was a liability at Free Safety during the course of the year in 2015. Cooper Taylor will get the start at Free Safety, Taylor has great size at 6'4" and decent speed 88 to stay back in coverage. Gerod Holliman might be rotated in passing situations for Weddle if need be.
K/P
Josh Lambo - K
Chase Hudson - P
Lambo had a solid season going 21-24 but lacks the big leg that Owner/GM Cieske likes in his kickers, this could be Lambo's last season in San Diego
Chase Hudson is a big leg punter out of Georgia that is looking to make an impact right away when it comes to field position. In the first 3 preseason games Hudson has dropped 3 of his 10 punts inside the 20. Things are looking promising for this kid.
