Off-Season Review & Season 5 Team Preview

Glen Cieske

All-Star
Off-Season Review;

The Chargers went into the off-season with two goals: 1. Get faster on defense, too many times during the season the Chargers safety help wasn't in position because they were to slow. It was most prevalent when then Ravens WR Bresad Perriman went off for over 20p yards receiving. 2. Get to the QB. Sacks were hard to come by last season, the new coaching staff in San Diego wanted to make sure they got pressure on the QB.

Chargers Owner/GM Glen Cieske was a big spender in free agency. With the signings of Shaq Thompson, Donovan Smith, Damarious Randall and Sean Richardson the Chargers had flexibility going into the draft. The Chargers also brought in Jaquiski Tartt, Jimmie Ward, Benardrick McKinney, Eric Rowe, Mycal Rivera, DC Jefferson and Khairi Fortt.

Damarious Randall was moved to FS immediately after arriving in San Diego. His speed (90) and Zone Coverage skill (87) pared with his catching (73) will make him a force deep in cebter field. Sean Richardson will getbthe starting nod going into the preseason. His speed (87) combined with size (6'2" 216) make him a threat to cover deep or up to stop the run.

Shaq Thompson gives the Chargers a young and versital playmaker. Thompson has the ability to be a 3 down Linebacker in the Chargers Hybrid defense. He also possess the skillet to move to SS on occasion.

At the conclusion of free agency the Chargers have appeared to have solved their number one problem from last year. ......speed.

The Draft

The Chargers traded Keenan Allen away for 2 picks and WR Paul Richardson. The 2 picks plus the Browns 3rd pick gave the Chargers 10 on the night.

These were the picks:

Round 1 #20: Dyron Gaitor OLB Overall 81 - Avg Development.

In Gaitor the Chargers get a player very similar in size and raw ability of Shaq Thompson. He won't start but he will see the field, especially if Thompson goes down due to an injury.

Round 2 #8 (from Titans via Jets): Kion Klein OLB - Overall 80 - Superstar dev

The Chargers get there pass rusher here at the beginning of the second round. Klein has speed (80) acceleration (88) pusuit (87) block shedding (pwr move 82, finesse 78, blk shd 77) and Zone Coverage skills (85) along with hit power (81). He will take Jeremiah Attachou's starting spot immediately, the Chargers are counting on him to get after the QB when in the 3-4 and nickel and dime packages. He could also be put at DE in a 4-3.

Round 2 #20: Garic Riley HB - Overall 70 - Avg Development

Not the flashiest pick and definitely a reach but he fills a need. With Melvin Gordon gone the Chargers needed a RB who could catch the ball out of the backfield. He has speed (90) acceleration (92) and agility (89). He is elusive (88) and can return kicks (91). He will be in a Darren Sproles type role.

Round 3 #7: (From Titans via Redskins(?)) Andre Patrick CB - Overall 65 - Avg Development

Again another reach and another project player. Patrick has the physical skill set, 97 speed - 94 acceleration - 75 strength but lacks a mental skill set 39 awareness - 61 play recognition. If the Chargers can get him on the right path he could end up a very good player in the future.

Round 3 #20: Blake Jose WR - Overall 78 - Superstar dev

Chargers were excited to see him here late in the 3rd, I'll let his attributes speak for themselves.

Speed 92
Agility 98
Accel 96
Jump 92
Elusive 87
Juke 91
BCV 88
CTH 82
Spec CTH 82
CIT 77
RTE 76
Release 80

Round 3 #32: (from Browns) Lunior Jacobs HB - Overall 69 - Avg Development

Roster filler that might end up getting a few carries. Good speed (89) good trucking (87) and a great juke move (94)

The rest of the draft to follow, including a team preview.
