Free Agency still has a few weeks left, but sources indicated that remaining guys that Pittsburgh is in interested in will just be depth/practice squad guys.
Garret James and Mike Tomlin said that they would focus on defense in Free Agency after struggling mightily down the last 8 games. When FA started there were some big names on defense like Khalil Mack, Tevin Smith, Alex Ogletree, Jadeveon Clowney, and Avery Williamson. It seemed like the team would focus their 30mil in cap space chasing at least two of those guys. Quickly realizing that they would not be able to out bid some of the bigger names and feeling like their were some great options on offense their mindset changed. The only notable signings were Dez Southward and the aforementioned Avery Williamson. Some people around the team feel Southward is a great cover safety and might win the FS battle. Williamson accepted a move to LOLB and will fit perfectly with the teams new 4-3 scheme. Look for this team to focus on DE in the draft as they did not sign any pass rushers and only have Bud Dupree as a DE.
The offense is where the team hit a homerun. Despite Hurd's great contributions over the last 8 games of the season the team felt that they could really improve. They signed Devonta Freeman who's been a second team all pro was the perfect fit. Beyond that the team strengthened it's already extremely impressive WR corps with the signing of Randall Cobb. When the signing was announced people felt that this may signal the last year of Antonio Brown in black and yellow, but owner Garret James refuted these reports.
James said, "Brown will be a Steeler for life. If I have to tag him until then I will. He's a core player and someone we will protect." The team also would go on to sign Jeff Driskel. Driskel seems to be the project that the team hopes to take over whenever Big Ben retires. Signing him to a 4 year deal, told Ben that they were in no hurry if he wants to continue to play. James said this about Big Ben, "He's the starter until he retires, whenever that is. He's the greatest Steeler ever to throw a football. When he retires, so will #7."
Going into the draft the team needs a DE, a 3rd TE, CB, and possibly a FS. This team will be completely dependent on it's Offense.
