CFA 6 Review

In an exciting night of fights where contenders for fight of the night were aplenty, the main event stole the award with a rousing war between Junior dos Santos and Daniel Cormier that went the entire 25 minute distance. Daniel "DC" Cormier ended up sweeping the judges scorecards 50-45, winning via unanimous decision. But if you watched the fight, it never appeared that DC had dominated the bout. Each round had very equal striking, with Junior dos Santos picking his shots and countering as Daniel Cormier controlled the center of the octagon and placed brutal body kicks and punches into the torso and sides of JDS. It was the grappling that perhaps gave Cormier the edge as he frequently took JDS to the cage and tripped him, or feinted a combo and slammed JDS to the mat. No matter the result, this fight was one hell of a war and both of the participants should be applauded for surviving all 5 rounds. Daniel Cormier is now the reigning heavyweight champion in the CFA, and his camp should be proud.

The co-main event had mystery written all over it. A title contender elimination match meant one of these fighters would have to climb back up the stacked division ripe with talent. Georges St. Pierre was coming off of a knockout victory against Robbie Lawler, where he never seemed to be in trouble. And the sportsbook had his opponent BJ Penn seeming as though he was just another victim on the way to challenging Tarec Saffiedine for the welterweight strap. Instead, GSP looked unlike himself and The Prodigy took advantage. BJ took him to the ground and pounded him down for the unanimous decision victory. BJ Penn is now 3-1 in the CFA and is probably looking at a title shot against the champion Tarec Saffiedine later this month. During the press conference, BJ was very conservative when asked what his coach Jaime Deleon did to improve his wrestling so drastically over the past 3 bouts. "At camp Deleon we work on all facets of the game, but knowing what Georges can do on the ground, we had to focus more on our wrestling to win. He is a tough opponent and I simply got the better of him. I wish him the best of luck in his next fight but I'm looking to keep advancing in this division," The Prodigy said. And he is currently on fire, having lost his first fight against Nate Diaz, BJ is now 3-0 in the CFA.

Jon Jones is without a doubt one of the most promising light heavyweights of all time. Though a head kick rendered him unconscious against Glover Texeira, he rebounded by losing the first round of his bout against Phil Davis, and then coming back and rendering Mr. Wonderful unconscious through a head kick as well. Bones' third fight in the CFA was no different from his second. After a tough first round that could have gone either way, he laid his shin across Forrest Griffin's face and knocked him out. When asked about what went wrong in his first fight during his post-fight interview, Jones did not seem like answering: "The past is the past. Hopefully Glover and I meet again. I'm a new fighter, and I'm sure I can dominate him the next time we fight. As for this fight, Forrest showed a lot of heart to take a fight everyone had him losing, so props to him and my training camp," Jon Jones is now 2-1 in the CFA and is looking towards the top of the division for his next fight.
