The Colorado Rockies have agreed to trade RF/DH Charlie Blackmon, 2B Adael Amador and LF Brenton Doyle to the San Diego Padres for P Yu Darvish and C Jorge Alfaro.

The Rockies are looking to trade Blackmon who is in the later part of his career. The Padres are believing Blackmon can serve as a DH role/bench bat and even the occasional RF spot while the Rockies have plenty of young OF prospects that are looking to break into the big leagues in the next year or two. This is also why the Rockies are trading away their #16 prospect in Doyle. Doyle is a solid prospect but with at least 3 outfielders ahead of him in the pipeline, as well as the Rockies having money to spend these next few years, while the Padres are looking to add depth in the farm. They are also trading away Amador, their #9 prospect, as the Padres are looking to add some depth at the infield position in their farm system as well.

The Padres are looking to trade Darvish to save at least 8 million next year, understanding that Blackmon does in fact have a PO for 10 mil. They also have top prospect MacKenzie Gore in AAA as well as Mike Clevinger returning from the IL to fill the spot in the rotation Darvish leaves. The Rockies see Darvish as being their ace or at the very least their #2 guy in a rotation that has needed help for years now. Alfaro is behind Luis Campusano and Austin Nola at catcher while the Rockies see him as a player who could fill that DH role Blackmon is leaving behind as well as a solid defensive catcher as he is better defensively than their current options.

Colorado Rockies trade:
RF/DH Charlie Blackmon
2B prospect Adael Amador
LF prospect Brenton Doyle

San Diego Padres trade:
P Yu Darvish
C Jorge Alfaro

Because both centerpieces of the trade are older, I'm fine with the trade. Amador is still young and has good potential and Doyle is 23 and still getting there so I think that makes it even since Alfaro can play in the big leagues but isn't a superstar. Also good pitchers are in high demand and a change of pace might help Darvish. I'm fine with this trade. Agreed.
