During the preseason, two players stood out as guys having shown exceptional potential relative to their place in the 2018 Draft. Quinton Flowers of Chicago and Ben Banogu of Carolina wowed coaches with their ability to grasp concepts quickly and show marked improvement when given direct feedback and coaching. While both players were drafted in the 7th round, each had made their team's opening day rosters.
Flowers is an elusive, mobile QB from South Florida who wowed scouts with his athletic ability. Although he doesn't have the greatest arm strength, his athleticism and potential as a running back intrigued the Bears. They took Flowers in the 7th round as a project and have been impressed with his development so far. Getting him into games will be tricky with the work needed at quarterback and the depth they have at running back. However, the long-term potential is there should they invest the time in him with coaching and development.
Carolina was looking to add depth at defensive end with Charles Johnson and Mario Addison both over 30 years old. The Panthers took Chad Thomas of Miami in the 6th round and Banogu of TCU in the 7th. While both players shined in camp, Banogu really caught the coach's eye with his athleticism and raw ability. Banogu only started one season for the Horned Frogs (and one at ULM before transferring) so his growth potential in intriguing. Should Carolina invest the resources needed to tap that potential they could have a diamond in the rough uncovered in the 7th round.
