After going 1-3 in the preseason and losing 2nd round pick Malik Hooker for 5 weeks, the regular season started in a way too similar fashion. Not only did they lose the game but they also lost QB Matt Stafford for 5 weeks to broken ribs. The Lions were able to move the ball on offense but several costly turnovers ended up being the difference. Two of the three turnovers put their defense on the field with their backs to the goal-line. When not deep in their own end, the defense was unable to get off the field with 3rd and long plays on several occasions.

The Lions got the ball first and drove down to inside the Bucs 30 yard line when Stafford threw an uncharacteristically horrible corner route which was returned 79 yards down to their own 3. This led to a Doug Martin Touchdown. Later in the 1st quarter, the Lions would answer with a 2 yard TD pass to Golden Tate to tie things up at 7. For the rest of the first half, there was a lot of back and forth with each team only able to get a FG to make the game 10-10 at the half. Tampa controlled the 3rd quarter by keeping the ball away. They did this by converting a 3rd and 21 and a 3rd and 17 and with just under 9 minutes left, they went up 20-10 on Martin's 2nd TD of the day. On the very first play of the following drive, 1st round pick from Tennessee, Derek Barnett sacked, stripped and recovered a fumble at the Lions 12 yard line. Charles Simms took it in to give the Bucs a 27-10 lead. With under 7 minutes to go in the game while being forced to roll out, Stafford was hit as he dumped the ball off to Abdullah who took the ball down to the Bucs 19 yard line. That play resulted in Stafford being out for the next 4-6 weeks. The Lions were able to finish the drive with an Abdullah TD to close the gap to 27-17. The offense never was able to score again and they eventually lost the game 30-17.

With backup, Mark Sanchez now taking the reins, the Lions will look to find a way to win in week two as they travel to Cleveland to face the Browns.
