The 2019 Madden NFL draft is in the books. The Cowboys went into the draft looking to address some needs which included the left tackle, fullback, wide receiver and secondary positions. This draft was about adapting as most of the targets the Cowboys had highlighted on their draft board were taken in the middle of the round if not a few picks prior before the Cowboys could draft certain players. The targets turned out to be good players and would have improved the Cowboys which in turn caused the Cowboys to shift strategy and adapt a more best player on the board in a position of need or looking for improvement.

The Cowboys had 7 picks at the 23rd spot in each round. Here are the picks and why they were made:

1st: Vlad Boireau, WR, 80 OVR - The Cowboys were hoping to go LT in the first but as all the options on the board were taken the Cowboys liked the prospect of getting a smaller speedster in the mix with the WR corps. They struck gold with V. Boireau as he has 98 acceleration, 91 speed, and 91 agility. He has superstar development as well. He should bring another quick pass option and speed threat to the offense.

2nd: Lawrence Childs, LE, 70 OVR - The Cowboys were looking to trade out of the 2nd round to gather more late round picks but were unsuccessful. They were wanting not to reach for later targets too early so they took a blind look at Childs who could help in their defensive scheme by adding depth for the starters. He’ll battle to stay with the team. Not what the Cowboys were hoping for with a 2nd round pick. Reaching for a more coveted prospect may have been a better decision.

3rd: Silas Guyton, DT, 69 OVR - Addressing a position of need but not the optimal target the Cowboys settled on S. Guyton. He is strong but doesn’t seem like the positional fix and improvement the Cowboys were hoping for. He’ll battle to add depth to the roster.

4th: Andrew Diaz, LT, 71 OVR - Addressing another position of need multiple rounds later than the Cowboys wanted they drafted A. Diaz. He is a physical specimen at 6’6” and 329 lbs. He is strong and is a slightly better run blocker than pass blocker. The cowboys are hoping he will develop into a good player that can compete for a starting position.

5th: Nick Mason, CB, 70 OVR - Cowboys were hoping to add depth in the secondary with N. Mason. He is a speedy, athletic prospect that is good with Zone coverage but will have to improve in Man coverage. His overall athleticism should help him push the starters to make an impact in the secondary rotation with hope of becoming a starter down the road.

6th: Pierce Ealy, WR, 66 OVR - The Cowboys took a chance on a big WR named P. Ealy. He has the size which is 6’5”, 238 lbs. He is quick for that size with 88 speed and 89 acceleration but needs to improve his route running and catching while in traffic. His size should keep him around for depth purposes in hopes he will develop into a deep threat and red zone threat.

7th: Dejuan Johnson, FS, 71 OVR - The final pick for the Cowboys was D. Johnson. The Cowboys were hoping to hit on a diamond in the rough and found a good pick for the 7th round. D. Johnson will add competition and depth in the FS position. He has great power and decent tackling but will need to work on coverages and improve on his good speed.

The Cowboys had a good not great draft. They could have had a better draft if some players had fallen a few picks further multiple times. They made the most of their scouting data and didn’t miss on too many. The Cowboys were unable to land a FB in the draft and will be monitoring free agency to possibly fill that void.

The Cowboys earned a draft grade of C+. They worked on addressing needs but waited and missed out on impact players at those needed positions. The drafted players weren’t busts but will struggle to impact the team. The one exception is their stellar 1st round pick. He is ready to make an immediate impact on the offense which raised the score from a lower grade to it’s current grade.

Read below for a brief on the recent coaching change that the Cowboys have made. Look forward to the next volume after the preseason for a season outlook.

Press Alert:

The Dallas Cowboys organization is welcoming a new coach today. He has great leadership qualities, is hardworking, and sets high expectations. He looks to win through hard work, learning and practice. He is one of the youngest head coaches when it comes to experience but makes up for it in years of life experience in other endeavors and fields. The new coach has big shoes to fill after an 11-5 season but luckily has a talented team that is capable of overcoming coaching shortcomings. We wish him the best of luck and know he’ll make the Cowboys Nation proud.
