"Chargers completely #Bolt'ed down Cam Newton" was the headline from the local newspaper regarding this week's defensive win! What a game to watch!
Chargers controlled the whole game as Panthers scored 8 in the end of 4th quarter to make it look more respectable on paper. But the Bolts defense was clearly the winner in this one!
Once again, Rivers did not throw a pick going 16 of 23 for 203 yards and 1 TD with a 111.3 passer rating.
That appears to be the recipe for success for the Chargers. Although, it is a simple recipe, frankly it's a one ingredient recipe. Well, maybe two, because with Rivers no picks, Melvin Gordon also rushed for over 100 yards for his second game in a row and his third time this season. So, two ingredients in this delicious Win Cake! Shoot it's the same recipe for all teams.
If the Chargers can maintain the Rivers game management and Gordy's running, they should be able to finish above .500. But .500 will not get them to the playoffs sharing the division with the Denver Broncos who are undefeated. We'll see how the team progresses as the season unfolds.
But back to the game. There were a ton of highlights.
First Quarter started normal with nothing special, with each team feeling the other out with a couple of 3 and outs. However, there was one crazy pass where Keenan Allen caught the drag was headed up the field - possibly for the score when all of a sudden he's tackled from behind and the ball comes loose...and Keenan recovers.
Later in the second Quarter Keenan fumbles again, and the Chargers lose the ball. This was the Chargers only turnover. The Chargers are going through Contract talks with Keenan and this may be a part of the issue, more on that in coming weeks.

Second Quarter - is where the Chargers defense comes alive. As SS Tyvon Branch was easily the player of the game with a Tyvon Trifecta of plays.
1. Here he helps maintain Kelvin Benjamin by denying him the ball.
2. Again in the 2nd quarter, apparently it takes two to tango as Tyvon Branch gets the pick after standout rookie CB Dontrell Jordan breaks up the deep ball! This might be the highlight of the game! A ton of great athletes on the field!

3. And if that's not enough for Tyvon Branch he also forced a fumble on the Panther's running back. He was literally everywhere. Trifecta is complete!

Te'O proves his Defensive POW is truly worthy of his shoulders as here he Picks off Cam Newton and returns it for a TD!!! Te'O's first pick of the season was a great one. He is a much improved MLB and is easily the best linebacker on the Chargers team! Go Bolts!
