The Minnesota Vikings announced today two separate deals on the eve of the season's first game.

The first deal was with the Dallas Cowboys who agreed to send linebacker Bruce Carter to the Vikings in exchange for a second round pick in 2014 and a fourth round pick that same year. While the deal has been agreed to in principle, the deal has to be submitted through the league office.

The second deal potentially ends the Vikings quest for a quarterback. Minnesota acquired former Michigan and Arkansas star Ryan Mallett from the Patriots. In addition, the Vikings also receive safety Tavon Wilson and the Patriots 2014 fourth round draft pick. The Vikings will give up their first round pick in 2014 and wide receiver Jerome Simpson.

Although inexperienced and somewhat aloof at times, Mallett is a big time talent with a big time arm. If the Vikings are able to keep him focused and out of trouble then they could have their quarterback for the next several years. If not, well, then it will be just like any of the past six seasons (sans 2009 with Favre).

Both Carter and Mallett are expected to be in Minnesota for their opening game against the Lions. Carter is expected to start at weakside linebacker while Mallett could likely watch from the sideline as he get s acquainted with his new team.
