Season 1 Bye Week Update: Offense

Hall of Famer
Good Morning Cowboy Nation! It is the week 6 bye week so let's get into what has gone down so far this season! Your Cowboys are 2-3 so far, not quite the start we were hoping for but we will go over the good and the bad of the first 5 weeks, and what the Cowboys need to do to get back on track. One note we will leave on the header is that the Cowboys have won 2 straight games, so let's ride that momentum through the bye week!

Offense Grade: D-
The offense has had quite a lackluster start to this season. Coming out of preseason it was one of the top rated offenses in the league, so this is a huge surprise. Ranked 26th in the NFL as a total offense is not getting the job done. The Cowboys are also ranked 23rd in points scored. Just haven't been able to get the ball into the endzone. Let's dive in and see our high and low points with the offense.

Stock Plummeting:

QB Dak Prescott
90/147 1,140 Yards 4 TD 11 INT
6 Rush 43 Yards 1 FUMB

Coming off of a rookie of the year season, it seems that some NFL teams may now have figured Dak out. With a TD/INT ratio of 4:11 things have not come easy for Dak this year. The OLine has had some troubles and Dak has been sacked 11 times through 5 games. We are also seeing some poor decisions being made by the young QB. After last year, Coach Garrett has given Dak the power to change the play at the line. This may be part of what is going on with him. He has the new added responsibility and may be over thinking at times. Last year, he was so dominant because he didn't have that responsibility. He went out with the play and executed it. This team really needs Dak to get it together and motivate this team. He is the leader of this offense. When Dak suffers, the whole offense suffers.

WR Dez Bryant
17 Rec 246 Yards 1 TD

Part of Dez Bryant's stock going down, again falls on QB Dak Prescott. While Dez is the leading receiver in receptions for the Cowboys, he is not in yards or TD's. Bryant was actually held without a touchdown until the last game vs Green Bay. Prescott needs to find ways to get Dez the ball in more space, and let him go up and get it in 1 on 1 coverage. Dez is a top flight receiver, and everyone knows, if Dez is 1on1 he is open. The cowboys have been moving Dez around between X-Y-Z, so that may also be throwing off their chemistry a little bit. Trust me, both Prescott and Bryant are frustrated. They both have been working through the bye week to correct this. Look to see Dez getting back to his main role here quickly.

RG Zach Martin
55 Games Played 3 Sacks Allowed

RG Zach Martin is one of the powerhouse offensive lineman that make up the Great Wall of Dallas. While last year this line PUNISHED defenses, this year has not been the same. Zach has given up 3 sacks in just 5 games, which is kind of surprising considering what he has shown he can do his whole college and professional career. The 6'4 309 pound OG has shown he is frustrated. He has been staying late at practice, and watching game film all week. This OLine needs to get back on track to help Prescott out, which in turn will help Bryant out. It shows how linked the offense is. Everyone has to do their job in order for a high functioning offense to work.

Stock Rising:

HB Ezekiel Elliot
77 Rush 407 Yards 3 TD
11 Rec 63 Yards

Zeke the Freak has quickly made a name for himself in the NFL. As a rookie he led the NFL in rushing with 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has been the center of attention as well with some off the field issues. From the domestic case, to the partying, to being caught in a headshop, some people got tired of hearing about him. Once thing that always remains the same however is Zeke is a warrior on the field. Goddell came down with a 6 game suspension for Zeke, and after a wacky back and forth of legal battles he was able to play. He had a slow start to the season in the first 2 games coming off the appeal process, but in the last 3 he has really turned on the jets. He has rushed for 100 yards each of the last 3 games. Zeke needs to continue to do what he does day in and day out if the Cowboys want to turn this season around!

WR Terrence Williams
15 Rec 268 Yards 2 TD

Terrence Williams has surprised many people this season. He has had some issues in the last couple of years with drops and ball management, so not many people knew how to place him, including the Cowboys. Coming into the season the Cowboys weren't sure if Williams was the #2 receiver? The slot receiver? Or, considering the chemistry Prescott has with Butler, even the 4th receiver? Well while he is technically the slot receiver on the depth chart, Williams has moved all around the field. It has helped him get into open space and he has made some tremendous plays over the first 5 games. Look for Williams to continue to move around the field, and maybe draw some double teams. That should open up your other receivers, Bryant, Beasley, and Switzer... and if they don't cover him... Well... Williams could be in for a huge year!!

The Cowboys are riding a lot of momentum going into the bye week after winning 2 in a row. Once the bye week is over, they will head to California and face the 0-6 49ers.. One thing the Cowboys cannot do is overlook the 49ers. A lot is being said about this game, but if they don't stick to the gameplan, they could easily drop this game. The Cowboys are looking to get a W in San Fran and get this team back to .500! LET'S GO COWBOY NATION! GET BEHIND YOUR TEAM!!

You don't win once in a while, and you don't do things right once in a while.

You do things right All The Time
Winning Is A HABIT"
