Redskins Lose Ugly Game Against Jets
By Rich Tandler | August 20th, 2016

Redskins played a sloppy, turnover riddled game Friday night against the Jets. In the first of three games where Nate Sudfeld, Nate had a tough time keeping the ball in the hands of the offensive players, with four interceptions and a fumble, with the Jets defense scoring on one of those interceptions on a pick 6 and the fumble resulting in a touchdown scoop and score as well.

The playcalling certainly didn't help Sudfeld any, as once halftime hit and the turnovers started to pile on, the Redskins continued to throw the ball, resulting in more turnovers and far more attempted passes than coach O'Connor was happy with:

We wanted to see what Sudfeld could do after a few mistakes on the field, so we kept going back with him and calling our gameplan. We definitely got out of our original gameplan though. 41 pass attempts is something we never want to see. That is simply not what we wanted to do and that falls on myself for my poor playcalling mixture.

The one bright spot on the team was the work they did on the defensive side of the ball. Before the pick 6 at the end of the 2nd quarter, the Redskins defense had held the Jets to just 6 points (missed XP making it 6 instead of 7) and below 100 yards of total offense. Even with the offense being unable to hold the ball for long, the Jets amassed only 236 yards of total offense and only 276 total yards gained.

Even with the sloppy play, the game came down to an 8 point game at 32-24 when the Redskins forced the Jets to punt with just a minute left in the game. The Jets milked the clock down to the last second and the Redskins special teams called a punt block and fired off the ball with perfect timing and came within inches of blocking the punt. Sadly, they did not, and the resulting offensive possession ended quickly in another interception thrown by the rookie QB and the game came to an end.

Sudfeld ended with 289 yards passing and 2 TDs, but the 4 interceptions and 1 fumble were definite blemishes on the chance he was given.

Redskins next game will be playing host to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, August 26th at 7:00pm EST.
