2015 New York Jets Draft Preview

Round 1 Pick #6 Leonard Williams, DE, USC

Leo Will Draft.jpg

Leonard Williams is a physical and extremely gifted athlete. The number 6 overall pick in the 2015 draft might be the best athlete in the entire class. Leonard Williams hails from the University of Southern California where he amassed 20 sacks and 35.5 Tackles for loss on his way to consecutive First team All-American honors. Williams will easily plug right in at the DE spot in New York following the suspension of Sheldon Richardson. Look for Williams to make an immediate impact on the D Line.

Round 2 Pick #5 Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State

Devin Smith.jpg

Devin Smith out of THE Ohio State University looks to be a plug and play slot specialist for the Jets this season. The first thing that jumps out is his excellent speed and quickness. While he was known more for his stretch the field mentality, we see Smith building his NFL career in the slot for the next few years. Smith has tremendous upside, but does lack soft hands. Smith often finds himself double catching and dropping the easy balls. Smith will need to improve on his size a bit before he can be moved outside. However, look for Smith to make an immediate impact in this interesting group of receivers.

Round 3 Pick #18 Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB, Louisville

Lorenz Mauldin.jpg

Lorenzo Mauldin checks in from the University of Louisville. He projects to be an 43 Sam or 34 Edge Specialist. Mauldin is known for his high football character and non stop motor. Mauldin has dreamed of playing football the pro level and realized that dream by creating havoc in the passing lanes. He has great awareness and instincts. Where he lacks is where many thrive. Mauldin must work on getting lower at the point of contact and turning the corner a bit tighter. We see Mauldin as a project guy with some upside in special teams.

Round 4 Pick #4 Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor

Many of the Jets 2015 draft selections were based on value picks. The big man out of Baylor had a great college career that ended in a mediocre 2014. Despite little progression from 2013 to 2014, Petty improved on his accuracy. He has a strong physical body and can be functional outside of the pocket. He won't dazzle in the mid range game, but is as good as any in this draft on deep balls. What will bring success for Petty in the NFL is his ability to develop in a pro system. Many believe Petty slid to the 4th due to the 1 read system in Baylor. We are curious to see how he adjusts to the pro system. We are definitely excited to see what this man can turn into.

Round 5 Pick #16 Jarvis Harrison, OG, Texas A&M

Jarvis-Harrison.jpg

To me this pick was an absolute steal in the middle of the 5th round. Harrison has very unique build to him. He is big and burly, but has the athleticism of a basketball player. Harrison will have a few years to groom and mold into the type of player we need him to be. There will be no rush to get him on the field anytime soon. Was often bull rushed in college and caught trying to finesse defensive lineman rather than use his size. Once he realizes he has the strength to go toe to toe, he can use all his qualities to be a solid NFL guard.

Round 7 Pick #6 Deon Simon, NT , Northwestern St.

Simon.jpg

Deon Simon is a project 34 gap stuffer. He system nose tackle that will need a good amount of time to adjust to the NFL. Fortunately for him, he is the only other nose on the roster other than the might Damon Harrison. Deon will need to grow into his body for a couple year. He lacks explosion and quickness off the ball and will need to mature a bit before he is ready for spot in the rotation.
