Chiefs Season Preview
Chiefs Schedule
The Chiefs come into the 2016 season looking to get more production out of the quarterback and wide receiver positions. It took Alex Smith all of the 2015 to throw 11 TD passes to his receivers while some QBs do it in about a months time. Jeremy Maclin posted pretty good numbers but needs a solid number 2 receiver to take some pressure off of him. Look for Travis Kelce to have a solid year as well.
The Chiefs backfield looks to be in solid shape depending on how Jamal Charles comes back from his ACL injury. Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware proved to be viable replacements when Charles went down last year and could potentially take the workload off of Charles.
It's not surprising that West and Ware rushed the ball so effectively, given that the offensive line was so forceful this past season. Guard Jeff Allen was mysteriously out of the lineup to begin the year, but Andy Reid was eventually forced to rectify that mistake. Allen was huge, performing as one of the top guards in the NFL. Rookie center Mitch Morse was also solid. However, Allen left via free agency - and understandably so, given how poorly he was treated - leaving a gaping void in the interior of the front. Fourth-round rookie Parker Ehinger could win the job, but it could also be Jarrod Pughsley, who barely played last year.
The defense will return its key starters. Three starting positions (one DL, one LB, and one DB) are up for grabs on the defensive side of the ball. This unit has been one of the better ones in the NFL for a while and shows no sign of slowing down yet. Tamba Hali's age is a concern, as is the health of Justin Houston. They may not be the #2 unit in scoring defense again this season, but there is not much to suggest a fall out of the top 10 will happen this year. Returning your coaches and key contributors on a successful unit has a way of paying off in the NFL.
The Chiefs needed to bring back the Arrowhead magic that existed prior to 2007. Since that year, Kansas City was a dreadful 20-37 as a host, heading into the 2014 campaign. However, Kansas City is now 12-4 at Arrowhead over the past couple of seasons.
This season, they have an extremely tough road slate. There are no easy contests away from home, as Kansas City will have to battle the Texans, Steelers, Raiders, Colts, Panthers, Broncos, Falcons and Chargers. Luckily, Kansas City gets the Jets, Saints, Jaguars and Titans as hosts.
