Falcons Run Past the Dolphins

MIAMI, FL -- The Atlanta Falcons are now 3-0 so far on the preseason after a dominant victory over the Miami Dolphins. The starters once again saw one quarter of action as the team is gearing up for the regular season to start. Luckily, both teams made it out of this one unscathed.

The first quarter saw the Falcons force a Dolphins' punt and then proceed to drive 80 yards down the field capped off by a 13 yard TD run by Devonta Freeman. Matt Ryan also accounted for 41 yards passing on the drive, as the Falcons offense looks to already be in midseason form. Hopefully this will be a sign of things to come as the Falcons look to bounce back from an 8-8 record last season.

Matt Schaub once again led out the 2nd team, as he's had a great preseason thus far. He would end up completing 5 out of his 6 passes for 29 yards in one quarter of action. When Schaub was in, the was mostly put on the shoulders of 2nd year running back Tevin Coleman, who finished the day with 11 carries for 65 yards and 1 TD. Overall on the day, the Falcons managed to rack up 133 rushing yards, and 336 total yards of offense. Atlanta would add another TD in the 2nd quarter, and due to a missed extra point by Miami, head into the halftime break up 14-6.

Then it was Mike Vick's turn at the helm, and boy did he not disappoint. Vick would post a nearly perfect QBR, completing 7 of his 9 passes for 144 yards and 1 TD. Vick looked calm and in control of the 2nd teamers, and has given Dan Quinn something to think about:

Mike was great. I think last week he was a bit nervous coming back, but after another week of practice he really had everything down. Obviously Matt Ryan is our starter, but Mike and Matt Schaub are having a heck of a battle for that backup spot. They'll both make the roster, but they're both probably going to see 2 quarters of action against the Jags.

The Falcons' defense had to be the most impressive part of this game, holding Miami to just 6 points up until about 2 minutes to go in the game. The Dolphins would go on to score a garbage time TD to cut the 27-6 lead down to 27-13, which would hold as the final score. The defense held the Dolphins running backs to just 41 yards rushing on the day. Rookies Deion Jones and Devonte Johnson would both intercept passes contributing to the dominant performance by the defense.

Here are the highlights from this week's win:

The Falcons are now 3-0 on the preseason, and will look to finish this regular season tune-up at 4-0 as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars.
