Atlanta earns gritty W, stays in divisional race

What a crazy season for the infamous NFC south. A year removed from an atrocious year all around where the 7-8-1 Carolina Panthers made the playoffs and won the division, this division looks like the new NFC west in terms of competitive football. The falcons, panthers and bucs are all 7-3 while the saints are 6-4. New Orleans may not be able to keep up for the crown, but they're still a very good football team. Between the rest of the 3, it's a complete toss-up. The bucs ousted the falcons once this year in OT and the rematch is quickly approaching while the falcons and panthers have yet to play at all. Meanwhile, the bucs hold a 1-0 lead over the Panthers, but week 17 could determine the division winner in a game in Carolina. Atlanta won this week, holding on at home to beat the colts 31-21 but the game was a very back and forth one. Atlanta found themselves down 14-7 staring at halftime with the ball on their own 2. Matty ice drove them 98 yards in 1:20 to tie it up. Luck would then throw a beauty of a pass on a post route for a TD and Ryan had to respond. Twice the falcons were facing 4th down. Twice they went for it. On 4th and 1 from the Indianapolis 48, Patrick DiMarco found 3 yards to move the chains. On the next set of downs, looking at 4th and 1 once more from the 38, ryan faked a handoff to DiMarco and tossed it to Coleman who bolted to the endzone for a 38 yard score. They never looked back, relying on a stout pass defense, a sharp matt ryan, an opportunistic Leonhard Hankerson (2tds, 6 rec, 150+yards) and a tough Tevin Coleman (20 attempts, 135 yards). Coleman is looming like a strong ROY candidate, but the race is far from over. The falcons have one more game against the vikings at home before launching into intense divisional play, a stretch that will define their season.
