Miami- As the season nears Miami is gearing up for their 2018 showcase. The Dolphins finished up the regular season a year ago 7-9, the second consecutive year below .500. The good news is the organization finally hired a new trainer in the offseason. This should help the team reduce injuries they were riddled with last year. The Dolphins also picked up a few big names in free agency and in the 2018 draft. For now they seem to be very pleased with these alterations.
In free agency the team aggressively went after DE Kony Ealy. Experts suggest the team did not plan ahead to spend as much for the 26 year old pass rusher as they did. I'm guessing these same experts failed to predict the unforgiving bidding war the Fins found themselves in with the Chargers. This seemed to be which beach wanted to outbid the other at times. Miami made no mistake in letting San Diego know to take their interest elsewhere and Ealy was headed east.
Matt Kalil and D.J. Fluker will be joining the offensive line this year which the Fins really seem to be constantly working to improve. Just a few weeks ago we caught up with owner Tiger Boyd,
"We felt like the ground game was lacking at times last year. It's tough to run in this league, and our guys up front need to be bigger, faster, and stronger than those coming for our guys in the backfield. We're happy with Matt and DJ and we'll be looking to constantly improve."
The last notable mention in this year's free agency would be Brian Orakpo at OLB. Orakpo will bring a wealth of knowledge to this otherwise young linebacker group which has already been noticeable in practice over the last few months. He seems to have settled in very nicely thus far in this leadership role.
The Dolphins shot out of the gate firing at Outside Linebackers, first taking T.J. Watt out of Wisconsin. If you're not familiar, you should be with his older brother J.J. Watt DE for the Houston Texans. Watt was selected 12th overall. In the second round, Fins selected a second OLB Jerome Baker from Ohio State, Baker has a knack for getting in the backfield in a hurry, but can also drop back and cover if needed. It will be very interesting to see what happens between Orakpo, Jenkins, Baker, and Watt this preseason.
The Fins selected 2 Tight Ends in each of their third round selections, Troy Fumagalli out of Wisconsin and David Njoku out of Miami. The team will be more versatile at tight end, due to Njoku's speed and Fumagalli's blocking and possession catches. Jordan Cameron will still be the clear number one, but these two additions will give the Dolphins great depth this year. In the fourth round the Dolphins selected Ronald Jones II, a speedy halfback out of USC. Ajayi will not be outdone by any means as it seems in practice and team scrimmages he's running and developing at a rate that leaves Jones II, Drake, and Hood fighting for the backup role. As we saw last season the Dolphins like to run a fresh pair of legs as much as they can, so expect to see these backups get a few touches. In the fifth and sixth round the Fins selected back to back wide receivers, ArDarius Stewart from Alabama, and Terry Godwin from Georgia. These two talents have blended well with an already loaded receiving corps. Both from respective programs in the SEC have realized quickly they best prove themselves early if they are to secure a spot on the final roster. In the last round the Fins selected Greg Gaines a DT from Washington for clear depth purposes.
The Dolphins open up the regular season with a rare four game stand!! Fans are hoping this means a strong start to the year. Ironically enough the team dropped the first four games last year so they'll try some role reversal in their own backyard this time around. To go 4-0 would be a statement no question, but so would 3-1. In the first four they will face division rival Jets in the opener, followed by the defending Super Bowl champions the Texans. The Bears come to town in week three and the Fins close out the home stretch against the Bills, who were crowned kings of the division a year ago. Miami will look to stand tall in the opening weeks and throughout this year as the Fin faithful are ready to see the same. This organization will look to put a winning season together this year. The time to be more competitive is now. After hanging around this group for the last couple months, I'm excited to see how this buzzing energy which seems to be present translates to the field! Thanks for the read the 2018 season is here!!! Fins Up!!!
