2016 Free Agency By Division
(Minimum $20M total or $10M per year)

The ultra competitive AFC North competed with the AFC West and NFC North for the title of offseason free agency champ this year. All three divisions were heavy players in free agency which is not surprising since all three divisions are competitive year after year. When the dust settled, the AFC North edged out the other two divisions mostly based on Cleveland's signing of CB Patrick Peterson (the player many considered the prize free agent). Five of the eight major deals signed by AFC North teams went to defensive players, not surprisingly considering the division's history with defensive powerhouses.

The AFC West and NFC North were close behind with the AFC West landing superstars Derrick Johnson and Brian Orakpo along with speedy wideout T.Y. Hilton. The NFC North, meanwhile, reeled in Nick Foles, Andre Johnson, Tamba Hali and Jurrel Casey.

The top winner among teams had to be the Detroit Lions who signed Casey and Ali to shore up there already stout defense along with Johnson and Mackenzie Bernadeau on offense. Oakland will be no picnic to play against this year either as they added Johnson, Orakpo and cornerback Brandon Carr instantly giving them one of the league's top defenses. AFC North rivals Cincinnati and Pittsburgh each went nearly identical routes picking up two defensive stalwarts (Barry Chruch and Bruce Irvin in Pittsburgh and Akeem Ayers and Bernard Pollard in Cincy) to go along with top left tackles (Russell Okung and Riley Reiff).

Overall it was an incredibly active free agency season which saw the faces of many franchises transform. The trading season has been equally frantic as teams get prepared for the 2016 Draft. All of this offseason activity means that the entire landscape of the league will likely look significantly different by the time we reach the regular season.
