In the second part of Pirates trade today, the Pirates are sending 31 yr old RHP Joe Blanton and $3 million in cash to Colorado. The Rockies are going to be sending SS Edgar Renteria to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is over Joe Blanton's performance and high salary hit of $15 million per year. With the acceptance of the previous trade, Blanton becomes expendable to the Pirates. The Rockies are willing to part ways with the aging Renteria and with the Pirates sending cash, are willing to take on Blanton's remaining salary.
