Marty and Doc brought back a statistics wizard with an advanced computer algorithm to predict the season based on how each fan did picking their teams. According to the computer analysis, the Minnesota Twins, who won the World Series in 1987 the first go round, will be the second worst team in baseball now just ahead of the Lovable Losers, the Chicago Cubs.

The Yankees, powered by Babe Ruth and Don Mattingly, are projected to be the best team in the American League. Meanwhile, St. Louis, who lost the World Series to Minnesota in 1987 originally, is slated to finish one-game back of Houston as the best team in the National League. Marty and Doc got Major League Baseball to expand their playoffs for this project so each league will add two wild card teams in addition to the division winners. Boston, Detroit, Cincinnati and San Diego are the expected wild card teams according to the computer.

Major League Baseball ranked their Top 100 prospects heading into the 1987 season. Will we see some of these guys make an impact in our newly formed super league? Mike Mussina, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling seem to have the best chance form the pitcher's side. As for hitters, we could see Larry Walker, Edgar Martinez and Ellis Burks all factor into the outcome of the league.

Opening Day

There are some intriguing matchups to start out the season. First, Nolan Ryan (one of three in the league) takes on Mike Mussina as the Rangers battle the Orioles. We'll also see two 2010's stars Corey Kluber and Roy Halladay square off in Toronto. Zach Greinke debuts from the future to lead the Royals against the White Sox as will Justin Verlander for Detroit against the Yankees. The man whom the best pitcher trophy is named after, Cy Young, will try his mettle against modern days stars as hed leads Boston against Milwaukee.

In the National League, the Expos will get a surge from young phenom Pedro Martinez as he takes on 1920's star Dolf Luque in Cincinnati. We'll also see past meat future in Houston as Larry Deirker goes head to head with Clayton Kershaw. Lastly, Jake Peavy joins the Padres against the Giants. It should be an action packed first day of action and set the pace for the rest of the season!

Opening Day Highlights

The first game completed on Opening Day was Texas and Baltimore where Nolan Ryan held the Orioles to six hits over 8 2/3 innings before giving way to Dale Mohorcic to get the save and preserve a 2-0 shutout. Pete O'Brien and Ed Jurak drove in the runs for Texas.

Cleveland and Toronto also had a bit of a pitcher's duel as the game was tied 3-3 after six. Joe Carter laced a run scoring single in the 8th to give the Indians a 4-3 win.

Kansas City beat up on the White Sox as they pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 runs in a 11-4 win. George Brett had the game of the day going 3-for-3 with a home run and 6 RBI. Kevin Seitzer also drove in three for the Royals.

In the NL, the Expos were delighted with the addition of Pedro Martinez as he pitched a 3-hit complete game shutout against the Reds. Martinez also struck out nine in the game. With the Expos up 1-0 in the 6th, Razor Shines drove in two with a double to break open the game. The Expos would go on to win 8-0.

San Francisco jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Jake Peavy in the first inning but the Padres later tied the game in the 7th on a bases loaded walk to Randy Ready. The Padres would add one in the 8th and one in the 9th to take the game 6-4. Lance McCullers got the save and Trevor Hoffman the hold in the 8th.

The final game of the day saw Houston score two in sixth to take a 5-4 lead over the Dodgers. Jose Cruz drove in two in the win while the Astros knocked around Clayton Kershaw for all five runs.

New York vs Detroit and Boston vs MIlwaukee were rescheduled for Wednesday after being rained out.

Game of the Week

The second day of the season provided possibly the best game of week and maybe the year. The Mariners' Randy Johnson faced off against the Angels' Nolan Ryan in Anaheim. The two flamethrowers were expected to give the fans a pitcher's duel and they did not disappoint.

Johnson pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings for Seattle walking two and striking out five while Ryan pitched seven shutout innings walking six and striking out eight. Each pitcher gave up only three hits. The bullpens took over in the 8th and kept the game scoreless until the 11th where the Mariners finally broke the tie on a Dave Valle single scoring Mickey Brantley. Bill Wilkinson got the win with two shutout innings, striking out five while Gary Lucas took the loss.

As of May 1...

The first month of the season is in the books and the Boston Red Sox have fashioned the best record in baseball. Boston has both scored the most runs in the league and allowed the fewest. Bruce Hurst leads the Red Sox staff with a 5-0 record and 2.15 ERA.

Honus Wagner has helped the Pirates jump out to an early lead in the NL East while leading the senior circuit in hitting at .405. Pittsburgh is also being steadied by their closer, Don Robinson, who has the second highest save total in the NL (6) while posting a 1.59 ERA.

The Reds have used the league's second-best bullpen to overcome the league's worst starting rotation and bottom three offense. Frank Williams, Ron Robinson and Bill Landrum have all posted ERAs below 2.00 through the first month for Cincinnati.

The AL West is possibly the league's most competitive as five teams are within 2.5 games of first. Kansas City currently leads the division bolstered by the junior circuit's second-best hitting and base running team.

The Dodgers were bit hard by the injury bug right out of the gate as they lost Clayton Kershaw with a strained forearm in his first start of the season. He's expected to be out another two months before returning to action. The Yankees Rick Rhoden is also a notable injury casualty as he tore his labrum in his first start and will miss the season.

One of the key matchups this week will see Pedro Martinez (3-2, 2.41) of the Expos take on Tom Seaver (2-3, 2.97) at Shea Stadium on Tuesday. We'll also see the Astros' Nolan Ryan (3-1, 2.82) take on the Braves' John Smoltz (2-2, 2.41) on Wednesday from Atlanta. Finally, Friday will see the Angels' Nolan Ryan (2-1, 1.37) square off with the Brewers' Chris Bosio (1-2, 1.85) in a match-up of the first team to score twice probably wins.
