2018 Dallas Cowboys Season Preview

Hall of Famer
The draft is over and so is the preseason! The Cowboys have reloaded after a disappointing season to say the least. They ended up with the 12th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but as we all know they traded it away to the Cardinals as they felt they could have a good draft even with a late position. The Cowboys signed some new faces to the team and have reloaded. Let's take a look at what we have going this season.

The biggest need the Cowboys felt they had to fill was LG and TE. Chaz Green and Jonathon Cooper both filled the guard position last season. It was just par to say the least. Future Hall of Famer Jason Witten also retired, finally hanging up his cleats. Going into the draft the Cowboys had 3 TE on the roster. Geoff Swaim, James Hannah, and Rico Gathers. The Cowboys traded away their #12 pick for the Cardinals #29, 1st Round in the 2019 Draft, and LG Mike Iupati. Put a check on the LG position. Some people say it might've be a reach but the Cowboys took TE Dallas Goedert at #29. Put a check on the TE position. Goedert would be the first of two TE's the Cowboys took in the draft. The Cowboys also took LT Tyrell Crosby in the 3rd round (Our graphics editor was having issues and Crosby was left off of the graphic). Crosby is a 6'5 320 pound OT out of Oregon. Many speculate getting him in the third round was a steal. Crosby will play behind La'el Collins, as he has a contract expiring soon. The rest of the picks in the draft were all for depth. The Cowboys plan to train these guys, and once they earn their star you will see them! Those picks were SS Kyzir White (West Viriginia), TE Troy Fumagalli (Winsconsin), MLB Kenny Young (UCLA), and SS Tray Matthews (SS). One huge indicator that was taken out of this draft was they also drafted two SS. Jeff Heath has been put on notice.

Free Agent Signings
The Cowboys signed a plethora of Free Agents. They have a huge "Earn Your Star" mentality, so they are always looking for fresh blood to see if anyone can light a spark. They had 68 players going into preseason, so we will only talk about the ones that made the cut!

Probably the biggest Free Agent signing was Terrence West. The big bruising back who just two years ago had 774 years on 193 carries and 5 TD. Last season he had 304 yards on 73 carries and 1 TD. His carries and his production dropped last season, but that may have been a factor on why he was a free agent. When the Cowboys saw he was testing the market, they went after him hard. The Cowboys believe his grit and toughness can be a good parallel to Zeke. Zeke also missed 8 games last year, so it was an insurance signing. You know, just in case. With Morris and McFadden both leaving the team, the Cowboys also re-signed Lorenzo Taliaferro, and signed Antonio Andrews. Expect to see West to get mixed in often to give Zeke a breather.

The next guy of mention is FB Julian Howsare. It's hard to find a fullback to BigTex's liking in this league. While Howsare doesn't top the list, he will suffice for the time being. Dallas really needs to get the running game going, and if they are going to do that Howsare will be vital in that. He will need to get out front fast and be an outstanding lead blocker. Howsare can also catch a pass if needed out in the flat as an escape for Dak. While you won't hear much about him, he will be out on the field helping this offense!

CB Blidi Wreh -Wilson is another guy the Cowboys signed in the offseason that could potentially make an impact. While he is no means starting caliber on this team, he will be a good depth piece. He earned the #5 CB spot in preseason. He was battling veteran Nolan Carrol for the spot, and Wreh-Wilson ended up winning as Dallas cuts Carrol week 4 of preseason. With Scandrick creeping up in age, he has a good opportunity to learn and try to develop to this new system. He will be able to give guys breaks here and there and suffice as a #5 CB.

The final two offseason free agent signing that made the team are C Luke Bowanko and LG Josh Wells. These guys offer great depth for this massive O-Line. Injuries have been a hard issue here in Dallas so they feel comfortable in their "next man up" if anyone were to go down. If you remember back in past Madden titles, owner BigTex has history with these two lineman also, as they were both starters on his Jaguars franchise. BigTex likes these guys a lot and feels great this season with his O-Line!
