Season 3 is here and I thought I would do a little week by week update here for The Sons of Montezuma
Week 1:
At FSU
The Aztecs started the year with a night game on the road against a Top 5 ranked Seminole team. Always a heated rivalry anytime Coach Blake and Coach Dong face off and this years game was no different.
On paper the Seminoles looked to have the advantage and the game plan was simple for the Aztecs; control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, limit the big plays for the Noles and win the turnover battle.
Tonight the Aztecs were able to do all three:
SDSU ran the ball 24 times for 160 yards and 2 td's led by Chase price with 17 carries for 115 yards and 2 td's
FSU ran the ball 20 times for 19 yards and a td but the Aztecs were able to sack the QB 4 times.
The Aztec defense was also able to limit the Seminole offense to 3 plays of 20 or more yards.
The defense also stepped up forced two key turnovers, one being a key redzone interception by Freshman CB Adam Weatherford.
The big question mark coming into the year was how will the Aztecs replace all everything MLB Jake Fely and can the defense make enough plays this year to win ballgames. During the offseason SDSU changed from a 3-4 base to a 3-3-5 and at times were a little lost on assignments but for the most part they performed well.
Key Plays: Two key plays both happened on defense. The first was OLB Tyler Morris picking off the option pitch on FSU's first drive of the second half that led to a SDSU FG. The second was Adam Weatherford's int of Coker in the endzone to end a scoring threat.
The San Diego offense replacing two key starters looked dominant and their well balanced attack resulted in only having 4 3rd down attempts all night. (one was end of game kneel down)
Players of the Game:
Offense: Chase Price- the rb had 4 catches for 17 yards to go along with his 17 carries for 115 yards and 2 td's
Defense: Weatherford made the biggest play of the game with his momentum swinging int in the second half so he deserves a lot of credit. Honorable mention goes to the SDSU defensive line. They played dominate football against a weaker then usual FSU line holding the Noles running attack to 19 yards and sacking the qb 4 times.
