Preseason recap/Week 1 preview

Youngfuture

Starter
While some people believe the preseason is a waste of time, it was very important for us this year with a first time head coach and rookie qb to get the reps in before the real season begins. After a 4-0 preseason excitement seems to be building within the fan base that this team may be better than alot of people may have predicted. Lets take a look at some of the standouts and some roster battles with some shocking players who have be demoted to 2nd team

-1st team Offense (the * are rookies)
Qb- Lamar Jackson*
Rb- Leveon Bell
Wr1- Kelvin Benjamin
Wr2- James Washington
Slot wr- Antonio Callaway*
TE- Maxx Williams
O-line- Ronnie Stanley, Oscar Bell*, Ryan Jensen, Marshal Yanda(Captain), Alex Lewis

Even while missing the entire preseason James Washington remains penciled in to start although his margin for error is much smaller now with the amazing preseason Artavis Scott had. The other position battle that went under the radar was the backup HB which Kenneth Dixon ran away with. Actually Dixon was so impressive that he will definitely see game action which should help Bell stay healthy this year. The 2 big questions facing the offense is how good can the o-line be and was preseason Lamar Jackson for real! Completing nearly 80% of his passes Lamar dazzled showing great pocket presence and great accuracy. Even more scary was the fact that he did all this inside the pocket which should give Defensive Coordinators even more to stay up at night about.

-1st team Defense (the * are rookies)
Re- Terrell Suggs
DT- Brandon Williams
DT- Timmy Jernigan
LE- Matt Judon
LOLB- Raekwon Mcmillan/Ulysees Gilbert*
MLB- CJ Mosley (Captain)
ROLB- Kamalei Correa
CB-Donquel Gay
CB- Kevin Tolliver *
FS- Trey Marshall *
SS- Sean Davis

The youth movement was in full effect on the defensive side of the ball with only 2 players over the age of 26 starting. Defensive captain CJ Mosley looks to lead this unit back to what fans are used to, a hard hitting ball hawking defense. While veterans Eric Weddle, Jimmy Smith, and Derrick Morgan are all package specific players now make no mistake they will still play a vital role for us to be successful.

Pre-season mvps
Offense- WR Artavis Scott
Defense- SS D'Cota Dixon*

Season Outlook:
Offense
Strength- Balance and multiple playmakers
Weakness- Youth and Pass protection

Defense
Strength- Run Defense and Speed
Weakness- Inexperienced secondary and lack of dominant pass rusher

Week 1/ Carolina Panthers

While we dont know alot about the Panthers we do know that former MVP Cam newton will be coming and he always makes life difficult on the defense. Pair him with Leonard Fournette and it makes for a long day. We expect a great challenge as im sure they will try and confuse the rookie Lamar with different looks on defense so patience will be very important in this game. Emotions will be high though as Kelvin Benjamin faces the team that drafted him for the first time and as he was quoted this week "Can't wait!" Make sure to tune in on Sunday for NFL kickoff weekend! md-nfl-carolina-panthers-vs-baltimore-ravens-in-nfl-week-4.jpg
