Panthers Weekly Game Recap

Week 6 vs Saints

Another week, same results for this Panthers team. This once feared defense, now without Luke Kuechly, is just plain terrible. The defense could not do anything against the Saints as they fall 31-10.

The Saints wanted to play ball control offense and keep Cam Newton off the field and they succeeded. As the Saints controlled the ball for 27 minutes compared to 13 for the Panthers. The Saints accomplished this with both the run and passing games.

Drew Bree's finished an outstanding 23-23 for 230 yards and 3 TDs. WR Marlon Brown caught 2 of those and Brandin Cooks snagged the other. However, TE Josh Hill was the leading receiver for the Saints as he hauled in 6 receptions. The ground game was led by Mark Ingram who finished with 102 yards on 21 carries and 1 TD.

When the Panthers actually had the ball, they did some good things. Cam finished 10-19 for 166 with 1 TD and no int's. The one TD was to Kelvin Benjamin, who took a post route, split the safeties, and took it to the house for a 58 yard TD. Benjamin also made another big play later in the game, but it was in the Saints favor, as he made the only turnover of the game, by fumbling on the Panthers own 40 yard line. Which at the time was a huge momentum swing, as the score was only 14 -10. Mark Ingram took the very next play to the house and the Saints never looked back.

The Panther are luckily on a bye next week. Kuechly hopefully will return after the bye, but that is still up in the air. One good thing for the Panthers though, at least they won't lose next week. After the bye week they play at home against the Cardinals.

Week 7 vs Cardinals

Coming of the bye week Carolina was back in action, at home against the Arizona Cardinals. The new owner was actually pleased this week as the Panthers get a very good win, over a very good team 20-7. Luke Kuechly was finally healed up and it definitely showed. The defense held Arizona to 257 total yards and only allowed 56 on the ground. After being torched by the Saints 2 weeks ago this defense really turned it around. They forced 2 Carson Palmer int's and 1 fumble. But the defense did struggle to slow down the passing game other than the turnovers. Palmer finished 17-28 for 239 and 1 TD.

The Panthers offense was a mixed bag in this game. The running game carried the team. They rushed for 136 yards. The new free agent pickup, Spenser Ware, shined in this game. He totaled 110 yards on 20 carries, with 1 TD. Artis-Payne chipped in with 27 yards on 6 carries as well.

With the defense and the running game going, Cam didn't have to sling it all over the field in this one. He finished 8-14 for 220 yards, with 1 TD and 1 int. Kelvin Benjamin was the only receiver to find any separation, against the strong Arizona secondary. He finished with 5 catches for 148 and the only TD.

So the Panthers do get the win, which puts them at a pitiful 2-5 record for the season. They hope to keep the good momentum rolling as they travel to LA next week to take on the Rams.

Week 9 vs Rams

After looking good last week against the Cardinals, the Panthers were hoping to keep the W's going. But they went to LA and got beat up bye the Rams, 21-14. The score doesn't look as bad as this game actually was. The Panthers couldn't get off the field on defense. They lost time of possession 26 minutes to 13. This caused the offense to press a little and they didn't look good. They only totaled 114 yards of offense.

Cam was 5-11 for only 71 yards. He did throw for 1 TD though and no int's. But he was harassed by the Rams defense. He was sacked 3 times. The 1 TD was thrown to Devin Funchess, after he beat his man trying to press cover him at the line, and he went for the 39 yard TD. Spenser Ware had a decent game as he picked up 79 yards on 12 carries and 1 TD. He has been a good addition to this offense since being picked up.

The defense came into this game looking to control the Rams running game with Todd Gurley. They did a pretty good job of this. Gurley only had 46 yards on 18 carries. But all the attention paid to Gurley left huge holes for Jared Goff and the passing game. Goff finished 17-22 for 183, 2 TDS and no int's. The pass rush couldn't get a hang on Goff either. The Panther couldn't record a single sack in this one.

The Panthers will hope to turn things around next week as they take on the Chiefs at home.
