Blake Bortles Suffers Broken Rib
The Jaguars beat the Vikings on Sunday with a score of 27-20, but was this really a win? Late in the third quarter the 6'5 245 pound leader of this team went down with a broken rib. A read option was the call from the opposing 6 yard line. Usually a call for third string QB Johnny Manziel, the call was for Bortles number this week and it did not work out. Bortles was immediately stopped for a loss of yards. He immediately popped up but then noticed he was having some huge pains coming from his torso. It was decided that he will exit the game while still losing to get it checked out. He would not return. Rookie QB Brandon Allen came in for the injured Bortles and even threw a TD pass to Allen Robinson in the 4th quarter, and the Jags eventually ended up winning the game.
It was later shown that Bortles did indeed suffer a broken rib as you can see from the X-Ray above. Owner Chris Bigtex did have a presser about the situation after the news broke on twitter about the extent of his injury. The big takeaway from the press conference was:
Late in the third quarter of the Vikings game, Bortles was tackled and hit the ground in an awkward position. At first it didn't seem like anything was wrong, but after some pain he went to the locker room and did not return. It was later established that Blake did break a rib. We are ruling him out for the last 3 games of the regular season. He would be back for the playoffs if we continue to ride this momentum streak and make it in. This is a huge blow to Jaguar Nation and the team. We would love to have him out there early, and nobody wants to be out there more than Blake, but we are going to let this injury fully heal before we try to put him back on the field.
We are weighing our options. Brandon has put in a lot of work this year in practice and you got to see a little bit of him last week. It was obvious that it was a situation he hasn't experienced yet but it was great to see him connect with Robinson on that 52 yard pass late in the 4th. We also have Johnny Manziel on our bench. He has seen more game action this year than Brandon and has a little bit of NFL experience. I know the kid well and am very familiar with him and what he can do. He can also be an option. We have talked to a couple free agents, but as I said we are weighing our options. You'll find out as soon as we find out.
