Week 5 vs the Bengals

In one of the wildest games of the year thus far the Lions found a way to win in week 5 vs the Bengals. With Matt Stafford expected to return to action in week 6 the Lions need to find a way to protect him or he may not last long again this time. His backup, Sanchez was sacked 5 times this week. Even with the sacks, Sanchez once again did enough to pull out the win.
The Lions moved the ball well early but had to settle for field goals twice after getting inside the Bengals 5 yard line. After a 102 yard kickoff return by Keith Marshall with 20 seconds left in the half, the teams went into halftime with the Lions leading 21-7. The Bengals came out in the 2nd half the better team. Between the lack of a running game and pass protection, the Lions spent the majority of time on defense in the 2nd half. And it showed in the results as the Bengals quickly tied the game at 21 in the 3rd quarter. The first snap for the Lions after the game was tied at 21 was a disaster as Sanchez was sacked, fumbled which was returned for a TD. After a few back and forth drives with both teams throwing picks in the end zone, Sanchez put together one of the best drives of his career as he led the team 75 yards in the final 1:08 to tie the game at 28. This is when things got crazy. While attempting to squib kick to run the clock out and head to OT, the Bengals decided to guard against the onside kick which allowed the Lions to land on the ball at the Bengals 30 yard line. This led to the game winning FG as time expired. Here's a look at the Lions stats:

Sanchez 21-38, 302 yds, 2 TDs and 1 Int
Lions backs only combined for 18 carries for 45 yds.
Tate III - 6-115-1
Ebron - 6-81
Kupp - 4-60-1

Rookie Malik Hooker had 8 tackles and 1 Int

Turnovers were the difference this week as the Lions defeated the 49ers 40-9 in their week 6 contest. Early in the game the 49ers fumbled on their 2nd play from scrimmage which led to a quick TD pass to Ebron. On their 2nd possession, Darius Slay picked off the Watson pass and took it to the house. These quick scores seemed to give the Lions a momentum that they never relinquished. The win elevates the Lions to 4-1 with a huge division game coming this week against the Vikings. Here are the highlights to the week 6 match-up.

Week 7 vs the Vikings. Final Score Vikings 23 Lions 15

The Lions knew that this would be a tough game against a very stingy defense but really made the game even more impossible by giving it away 5 times. Stafford accounted for all with 5 interceptions, even worse, throwing 2 in the end zone. Stafford was able to put together several nice drives throughout the game and got inside the Vikings 10 yard line 3 times, only to come away with 3 points. Both defenses made the run game almost non-existent, with Bridgewater doing a better job of managing the game and not forcing throws like Stafford did way too often.

Stafford and the Lions better find a way to fix this soon with the next two weeks against the division leading Bears and then on the road against these Vikings again the following week. Lose those and they can virtually kiss the division win goodbye.

Coach Caldwell said in his weekly press conference that attention will be paid to these costly turnovers and believes the run game needs to improve to open more lanes for Stafford to get the ball to his receivers.

After week 10, the Lions have lost 4 in a row. Week 9 saw the Lions completed dominated by the Vikings. In this game, you never thought they had a chance. The Vikings controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and by the middle of the 3rd quarter, the Lions players seemed to just want the game over. In week 10, this game was a tight defensive game throughout. The 4th quarter started with the Lions leading 7-3 until the turnover bug bit again. After several interceptions, Stafford was pulled for Sanchez, who didn't have any success either. This team needs to learn to win again and it needs to happen quickly.

After losing 4 in a row, the Lions were finally able to get back in the win column with a 27-17 win vs the Packers. The Lions were able to get back to 500 with a 5-5 record at this point. In what many would call the toughest division in the league, even at 5-5, the Lions are sitting in last place in the North. The playoffs are still probably unlikely but the win is still a good thing considering the last several weeks and how the team has played. Next up is a critical division game against the Bears who the Lions lost 20-17 to just a few weeks ago. Here are the highlights.

After getting back to .500 last week, the Lions were able to win again at home vs the division rival Bears, 34-16 to improve to 6-5 on the season. After a rough stretch of turnovers and poor play on both sides of the ball, the Lions have really turned things around as of late. Stafford was 15-22 for 267 with 1 TD and no interceptions. Maybe most impressive was the play of the defense. Ansah had 3 sacks with the rookie Garrett on the other side coming in with 2 himself. Another defensive rookie shined as well as Hooker had 8 tackles and 1 INT for another solid performance. Next week, the Lions will look to make it three in a row as they wrap up the division schedule with another battle with the Packers. Here are the week 12 highlights.

With a week 15 loss to the Saints, the Lions playoff hopes took a major setback. The Saints played mistake-free football in the 1st half whereas the Lions kept making mistake after mistake. The defense stepped up in the 2nd half and didn't allow any points but the comeback fell short and the Lions ended up losing 24-17. With one of the leagues best teams, in the falcons up next, the Lions will have to clean things up and play a near perfect game to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
