Week 5 vs the Bengals
In one of the wildest games of the year thus far the Lions found a way to win in week 5 vs the Bengals. With Matt Stafford expected to return to action in week 6 the Lions need to find a way to protect him or he may not last long again this time. His backup, Sanchez was sacked 5 times this week. Even with the sacks, Sanchez once again did enough to pull out the win.
The Lions moved the ball well early but had to settle for field goals twice after getting inside the Bengals 5 yard line. After a 102 yard kickoff return by Keith Marshall with 20 seconds left in the half, the teams went into halftime with the Lions leading 21-7. The Bengals came out in the 2nd half the better team. Between the lack of a running game and pass protection, the Lions spent the majority of time on defense in the 2nd half. And it showed in the results as the Bengals quickly tied the game at 21 in the 3rd quarter. The first snap for the Lions after the game was tied at 21 was a disaster as Sanchez was sacked, fumbled which was returned for a TD. After a few back and forth drives with both teams throwing picks in the end zone, Sanchez put together one of the best drives of his career as he led the team 75 yards in the final 1:08 to tie the game at 28. This is when things got crazy. While attempting to squib kick to run the clock out and head to OT, the Bengals decided to guard against the onside kick which allowed the Lions to land on the ball at the Bengals 30 yard line. This led to the game winning FG as time expired. Here's a look at the Lions stats:
Sanchez 21-38, 302 yds, 2 TDs and 1 Int
Lions backs only combined for 18 carries for 45 yds.
Tate III - 6-115-1
Ebron - 6-81
Kupp - 4-60-1
Rookie Malik Hooker had 8 tackles and 1 Int
