What a disappointing season for first year owner Jimmy Hendrix. Going 3-13 left many Cleveland fans questioning the direction of the organization. With pre-season ready to kickoff, the Browns decided to continue investing on youth by avoiding overspending during the offseason.

Releases

Among the 5 releases done by the organization this year, the most notable are

Paul Perkins, HB- Perkins was released after being taken from the practice squad last season. He leaves after averaging 2.3 on 59 attempts and 2 TD.

Justin Gibert, CB- Gilbert served one year as a Brown. He recorded 22 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 INT. He was signed by San Diego during the FA signing period and is expected to support the secondary early upon his arrival.

Draft

The Browns copied a move the Redskins did 4 years ago. Shortly after using their 2nd overall pick on Jake Browning, the Browns selected his immediate back up by grabbing Wilton Speight. This not only comes as surprise to Browning but to RG3 which was hoping to be the back up.

Hue Jackson stated that "QB was the ultimate position to fill in this team. We have struggled over the years trying to find flashy options. As an organization we decided to skip on Jackson and secure a balanced pocket passer that develops alongside our young team."

1st round- Jake Browning, QB- Obvious decision for the Browns. After seeing 3 different QBs during the 2016 season, the Browns feel that a dedicated starter with short and medium precision will allow the browns to move the ball consistently. His challenge as rookie will be improving his awareness and deep throw accuracy.

2nd round- Drew Bailey, LE- After moving Paul Krugger to outside linebacker, Drew Bailey will support the weak rush for the browns. Expect him to sit out this year.

2nd round- Brandon Fanaika, LG- Another young lineman for the Browns. While he provides great run support, he will likely sit out on shotgun formation.

3rd round- Wilton Speight, QB- Questionable move at first. After seeing failures by 3 different quarterbacks, Speight offers the Browns a solid option in case of injury. Trade could come next year if the Browns find a key player at another position.

4th round- Russell Richmond, CB- expect this cornerback to be cut before the season begins. Known for partying and using uncontrolled substances.

5th round- Van Smith, FS- Smith will see the field very soon supporting veteran Hill. Balanced player with much upside.

6th round- Brian Hill, HB- Young back with a fumble issue. If the Browns can break him in the preseason, expect 50-100 carries his rookie year.

7th round- KC McDermott, LG- Lastly, more guards. The Browns sought this opportunity to grow their line over time.
