MLB the Show - Rules and Settings

so let's discuss what we know and what we want/need as far as rules and settings go ... may even need to test some stuff if something is questionable

Prolly need to determine how FAs work out of the gate ... will prolly be some available guys that team's will want to chase ... maybe a waiver process to start the season then free game after that since the studs will get picked over?

Also I read from ridin on OSFM rosters will have international players in the FA pool so do we keep them in and they are free game w all other FAs? Or maybe remove them all together?

Have at it boys

Do we want anything that limits number of pitches or innings played by a starting pitcher? Just to throw out ideas and spark conversation I guess.

Well mike mentioned sticking to a 5 man rotation on slack a while back ... it's how they play in real life so it's the honor system that we should abide by ... CPU will often times throw guys on short notice and with depleted stamina and that makes no sense and it jacks up the stats too

Well that's over the course of the series or a week, and I wouldn't argue that anyways, but I'm talking about inside a single game, because the CPU just threw about 120 pitches in a single game.

Unless the stamina is bad in game we should be able to use the in game stamina. We can adjust it too I'm sure if it gets to be where throwing 8-9 innings every start is too easy. Although I'm guessing most of our games will be critical situations against CPU.

It prolly goes without saying but each home team will play their games at their respective ball field ... don't wanna use old time ball parks and possibly sque stats bcz u hit nothing but triples at the Polo Grounds lol

I think we just need to set a maximum number of stars for starters and maximum number of appearances for relievers.

Also, how are talking trading? Are we going with a committee or are we just trusting guys to trade with other users? Obviously no CPU trading as that would be too easy.

I would love if there was a way for us to use our bench players other than as pinch hitters. Last year in online franchise positional players never got tired. So you could play them every game of the season. I mean there's just no way to make sure everyone subs through the bench every 5 or 6 games and make sure it happens.

I agree w limiting starters on number of starts and relievers on IP ... majesty95 had some good ideas the other day and I think we could implement his thoughts

- SP w max of 36 starts and pitches every 5th day
- Relief pitchers w max of 80 games

Trades I would think would either be approved by a committee or majority vote by owners

Last year we required bench players to participate so you kinda have to self police that ... I've played a few games in offline dynasty and the CPU suggests starting players off the bench bcz ur starters are tired when setting ur lineups ... if that aspect is not in online franchise than each owner can manage that themselves

I think you guys are pretty spot on with starts and innings. I am mostly concerned about free agency right away.

I think it would be good if we set an order for free agency right away.

Question. How many games are we playing in a season? If 162, then we shouldn't have free agency because don't think we are playing more than 1 season?
How long does playing a game takes?
Again. Never player Franchise mode in MLB games before.

I am also new at this. I have only played Road to the Show and Diamond Dynasty. Mainly because I don't have enough gaming time to even think about 162 game seasons. If someone could please give a brief description of how the schedule will work. Do we play all H2H games and sim some of the CPU games? Once I understand how the schedule works, I feel I can better help with ideas on the overall franchise.

The offline franchise is a completely different experience from online franchise. The positional players don't get tired, unless they fixed it which they said they didn't change much if anything in online franchise. So we're gonna have to police it ourselves, but again that leaves awards and statistics open to the possiblity of guys forgetting to change out or just not doing it. That will jack up at bats for the best players when in reality stars do not play every single game. Nobody does. And without a standard of how many starts an everyday player gets it can be gotten around. If there's no stamina for everyday players I think it will be very tough to police.

Actually, you would be surprised how little the elite players actually miss. I only know this because I am in three fantasy baseball leagues and I love the guys that never take days off. Keeps me from having to change my lineups. Here is a small sample of a few of the best fantasy players from last year.

Trout - 159 games
Arenado - 160
Altuve - 161
Betts - 158
Bryant - 155
Donaldson - 155
Goldschmidt - 158
Cabrera - 158
Rizzo - 155

Anyways, you get the idea. In approximately 27 weeks of baseball, most teams are off one day per week and for a lot of the elite players, they don't get very many days off outside of that. If we wanted to ensure that our bench players get more time then maybe we could set a cap of games started at like 150 or so. Keep in mind that the numbers above may include a few days off and the hitter came in as a pinch hitter. I just know that other than catchers and platoon type players, the starters don't take much time off.

So maybe have something where every 2 games we rotate out 2 starting positional players or something along those lines as a general rule for everybody?

Just an FYI, we will play all 162 games in probably one month. Don't freak out lol. You can sim your games, play critical situations, sim until the 7th or 8th inning or use quick counts or all of the above. We want to get through multiple seasons so this is the best way to keep everyone involved. But with being allowed to sim and play bits and pieces of games it should be doable.

What about H2H games? Are we going to play those games out when possible? Maybe play at least one of the series?

For those who have never played before, simming could be a big way to get ur games in ... majesty95 was watching me play an offline game last night and all I was doing was batting ... I sim half an inning when I'm on defense as it gets me through my game quicker and I enjoy the hitting aspect of it ... played a game in like 15 min ... ultimately we will have 40 games a week to play and for some u can play close to all of them depending on what kind of time u wanna put in ... for others u may sim half of ur games, maybe more, while playing some of the H2H games (and these should probably be the priority IMO) ... critical situations will take roughly 5 min per game and that could allow u to get through a large block of ur games in a reasonable amount of time

As for free agents, I agree that starting out we should have a waiver wire ... I would recommend it be set up according to last yrs MLB team records from worst to first ... after the initial week of FA then I would say it's open season ... and we need to pay attention bcz I think last year the CPU started picking FAs up right away

The tricky part, even for vets, is figuring out How to manage ur team's budget, resigning of players, scouting / drafting for the future, all while balancing out all of ur major and minor league systems

If ur playing sim games then u can play those at anytime ... getting ur H2H games in with another user based on schedule constraints should be a focus and maybe a priority ... the schedule will allow us to bounce around and play games ... we don't have to play them in any particular order ... does that make sense? So if everything goes as planned, the first 40 games will be avaialable to play ... u pick which ones u would like to play first and I would base that on your H2H opponents availability
